How to Help Raccoons Stuck in Trash Bins

Researchers say raccoons are smart and have “ideas” and can solve problems. This gives them a human-like quality of curiosity. This abundant curiosity that raccoons have can sometimes cause problems for them. When raccoons are looking for food, they will do their best to get to any necessary point or to enter an area that they believe contains delicious food scraps.

Garbage cans are often the favorite option for wild raccoons in search of a quick dinner. They are great at getting into garbage cans, but raccoons are not very good at making a reliable escape route. This is why many find themselves trapped or isolated in empty trash cans and large trash receptacles.

They end up in these predicaments because the garbage cans are not always full. And while raccoons remember certain garbage containers that they have raided in the past with no problem getting out, these containers are sometimes less full or empty the next time they come for food. And they certainly don’t think before diving in!

To do

When you see one stuck in a dumpster, don’t panic. They can’t hurt you because they can’t even reach you! In fact, they are probably very scared and confused. You can expect the raccoon to hide in a corner with its nose against the wall, or to ruffle the fur on its chest and hide its face inside. They almost behave in a way that indicates they are embarrassed or embarrassed. This makes you want to help them even more!

To help a raccoon stuck in a dumpster, simply find something to put inside the receptacle that the animal can use to get out. Make sure to keep your distance as soon as you put the item in the trash, and also be careful not to hit or harm the raccoon. Raccoons have a long range and can jump quite well, so if a dumpster is four feet deep, you will only need an item 2 feet tall or more to help the raccoon.

Try items like a milk carton, a sturdy crate, a wooden 2×4, a large tree branch, and even a couple of bags full of garbage. Open the lid on the opposite side of the raccoon, place these items right next to the container, and then calmly but quickly walk away. If you stay close, the animal may not try to escape, or it may attack you out of fear. An attack is unlikely, but it is important to protect yourself no matter the circumstances.
