Photography Basics – Exposure Tips

Photo Exposure: The exposure you make with your camera is simply the amount of light that passes through the lens into the camera and onto the film or CCD sensor.

Or, in other words, the correct exposure is the amount of light needed to make a picture that is neither too dark nor too light. Of course, the correct exposure is somewhat subjective and a scene can be exposed in many ways and still be a beautiful image.

Exposure latitude is the degree to which you can overexpose or underexpose an image and still recover an acceptable level of quality from an exposure.

Digital cameras tend to have a narrower latitude than film, which means a narrower exposure range is needed to capture detail in both highlights (bright areas) and shadows (dark areas). So while digital has some advantages in being able to see the exposure results as soon as the image is taken, there is also a greater need to get the exposure correct as there is less latitude. Fortunately, there are things you can do in software programs to correct exposure problems after the fact, but image quality will always be better if you get it right in camera first!

Photoshop and Lightroom are two of the best programs to fix images. While Photoshop has more individual options and is more robust when working on a single image, Lightroom is the best program when it comes to batch processing. A wedding can involve editing 1000 photos or more, a real chore in Photoshop but something that can be easily handled in the light room.
