It’s not your fault!

I was mentored by the best small business development person in the world. Michael Gerber, author of E-Myth. That was about 28 years ago. I was a naive, energetic young man who wanted to know how business worked. I answered a newspaper ad looking for a high-energy person who could follow a system and learn how to help small businesses succeed.

Well, I went to the job interview with a lot of excitement and they hired me and told me to come back on Monday to train. I will never forget the day, the hour or the place when HE entered. He, Michael Gerber began to speak. His eyes were a cold steel blue and were fixed as if he could see right through you, she was a little flustered when he looked at me. Did you know what I did last night? How could I? Looked like. His words pierced the commercial veil that was over my eyes. He said that “95% of all small businesses fail in the first 5 years, 90% in the first 6 months.” Wow, really? I thought it can be. He continued, there are companies like McDonald’s, IBM and others that have figured out a system. That can be doubled and it generates cash over and over again day after day.

Then he talked about business titans Tom Watson, Ray Croc, over and over again with names he didn’t know of leaders who had the same idea. He creates a system, follow it over and over and over again. Teach it. Let others share in the joy of success. Now he was hooked.

He went into more detail;

Do you know that less than 1% of all McDonald’s fail? You know why? it’s the system. He said and then said the most incredible phrase I’ve ever heard in my business career “they remove discretion at the operational level.”

Now, if I were to pay Michael Gerber a royalty for every time I use that phrase, that would be a huge source of income for him. Develop a system and create an income stream.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said “if you build a better mousetrap, the world will make a way for us to your doorstep” Yes, indeed. Is there a system for the average person to generate an income stream? Yes there are. I have used a system for years and can duplicate it over and over again.
