Light-emitting diodes have long been used as indicator lamps for devices, such as alarms, clocks, signal lights, etc. The increased use of this type of lighting for general purposes is due in large part to the fact that the technology of its materials is becoming more advanced.

Texas Instruments commissioned the first commercial light-emitting diode product, the infrared diode, in 1962, as a replacement for neon indicator lights and displays. Their use in electronic test and laboratory equipment and electrical appliances such as calculators, radios, telephones, and televisions came in the late 1960s, but they were expensive. Infrared and visible lights were very expensive and therefore had little or no practical use.

Earlier versions emitted low to medium intensity red lights; however, modern versions span infrared, visible, and ultraviolet wavelengths with much higher brightness levels. The simple basic premise of a light-emitting diode is the release of energy in the form of photons, the effect of which is known as electroluminescence. The semiconductor energy band gap within the device determines the color of the light produced.

The development of high power white lighting as a light source is slowly replacing fluorescent and incandescent lighting. Industries such as advertising, automotive, aviation, and traffic signals are making use of this technology to enable the display of sensors, text, and video. Communications technology is another area where this product is finding increasing acceptance. DVD players, household appliances, and remote control devices are equipped with light-emitting diodes. A new form of wireless Internet, Li-Fi or Light Fidelity is another high-end development.
