Lately it seems to be the fashion among Internet writers to compare and criticize operating systems. While one user raves about the merits of Ubuntu Linux versus Windows Vista on his blog, another is quick to criticize Ubuntu’s lack of user-friendly features and available software. In this article I am here to sing the praises of the old dog Windows XP. Once the all-dancing multimedia darling, XP is now the big brother to the much younger and more modern Windows Vista. While Vista may be the life and soul of the party, it remains a problem child for many users who are frustrated by incompatibilities, poor driver support, and degraded performance in multimedia applications and games. If, like me, your Vista experience wasn’t all you expected, read on as we take another look at Windows XP and find that it can really teach an old dog some new tricks.

Security

One of the biggest surprises longtime Windows users had to deal with when upgrading to Vista was the new security measures, specifically User Account Controls. Microsoft’s response to the problem of malware running rampant on Windows machines was a barrage of security checks that can quickly become daunting. While emulating this feature might seem like a bad idea, UAC is a partial solution to a very tricky problem, and the alternative, allowing malware to continue to spread unhindered, isn’t really an option. Although you can’t have a Vista-style user account control in XP, there are several alternatives. An aggressive firewall product, like Outpost’s Firewall, not only monitors Internet traffic, but also alerts you when programs misbehave or perform potentially dangerous operations. Outpost costs $39.95 per year and includes a regularly updated spyware scanner.

Sudown is similar to UAC and allows you to temporarily elevate the privileges of a limited account to an administrator account to run programs such as installers. Sudown is less intrusive than UAC but arguably less secure and less comprehensive (you may need to log in to the administrator account under some conditions). Sudown is a free utility and is available from sourceforge.

Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer featured several significant updates in Vista. The handling of photos and multimedia files has been improved and the search has been fully integrated. Introduced “breadcrumbs”, this is a somewhat strange name that Microsoft gave to its new Windows Explorer extension that allows convenient navigation between directories and subdirectories.

While you can’t fully reproduce Windows Vista Explorer, you can actually do better. Directory Opus is the most powerful file manager/explorer on the planet and it works great with Windows XP. While a bit intimidating at first, most users will quickly learn to appreciate the power and flexibility that this utility offers. Outperforming Vista’s new Windows Explorer in almost every department and with powerful photo/multimedia features, Directory Opus is truly worth learning and there are plenty of comprehensive tutorials available on the Internet to help new users. Look for

Windows Vista’s built-in desktop search is one of my favorite new features in the operating system. Here, XP lags a bit behind its little brother, but it’s not a completely lost cause. Many users don’t realize it, but Microsoft Desktop Search is also available for free for Windows XP. While it lacks the seamless integration with Windows Explorer, it’s still a powerful tool. Sidebars and widgets

Windows Vista comes with its own sidebar with detachable widgets, but sidebars and widgets are old news in Windows (and indeed most other modern operating systems as well). My favorite XP sidebar is the unoriginally named “Desktop Sidebar”. This sidebar is highly configurable, uncluttered, and includes the best RSS feed reader/bookmark of all the sidebars and widgets I’ve tried. In fact, I even run the Desktop Sidebar in preference to the Vistas sidebar on my Windows Vista installation. Please google “desktop sidebar” for more information.

If widgets are your thing, there are currently several competing standards. The Open Widget Engine is slowly gaining momentum, with the goal of one day uniting the efforts of widget makers around the world. Until that day comes, you can choose between Google Desktop, Desktop X, and Yahoo Widgets. Desktop X is a powerful widget engine that is included as part of the Object Desktop suite that I mentioned in the Look and Feel section. The respective offerings from Yahoo and Google are free and therefore much more popular. Yahoo Widgets probably includes the best selection of widgets of all the available widget engines. Again, do a quick Google search for the program that interests you the most to find out more.

media center

Windows XP media center edition has been around for a while, but an upgrade to Vista Ultimate or Home Premium will give you full media center capabilities included in the price. If you’re using Vanilla XP Home or Professional and want media center capabilities, they’re available for free in the form of Media Portal, a highly configurable, open source media center application. Yahoo Go For TV is also free and worth checking out (at least if you’re American). Based on Meedio, which was one of the best commercial media center products for Windows, Go For TV seems to have stagnated since Yahoo took over. However, a wide range of plugins and accessories that were previously developed for Meedio are already available. Strangely, Yahoo currently insists on blocking all users outside of the United States, so if you live in another part of the world, don’t. Set up Google by searching for “media portal” or “Yahoo Go for TV” for more information.

Games and DirectX 10

As any PC gamer will tell you, XP is (at the time of writing) the best operating system for gaming. With Vista, Microsoft introduced DirectX10 and made it just for Vista. A number of impressive DirectX 10 games are regularly featured on the preview pages of major PC gaming websites and magazines. However, to date, in addition to a few update patches for older games, DirectX 10 games have Microsoft’s cutting edge for DirectX10/Vista basically consist of Shadowrun (an above average multiplayer FPS) and Halo 2 (a conversion of an old Xbox game). Replaying a previous-gen console title to demonstrate its cutting-edge graphics technology must have made sense to someone at Microsoft, but it makes little sense for gamers to assess whether an upgrade to Vista is worth their money, especially in light from performance handicap or paralyzed. sound exhibited by some games under Vista. The site of the battle, the small and remote Belgian town of Waterloo, is today synonymous with the “final act.” Waterloo became the denouement of Napoleon Bonaparte. His ignominious defeat at the hands of British forces, commanded by the Duke of Wellington, hastened his exile to the tiny island of Elba and France’s decline as a military power for almost a century.

The Prussian, Austrian, and Russian armies had allied to fight with the British against Napoleon. All of these large armies, moving across vast swaths of European terrain, needed extensive logistical, supply, and weapon support to keep the troops ready for the big battle. This was an incredibly expensive undertaking. Massive funding was required to support the campaign.

The Rothschild banking family was already famous throughout most of Europe for providing a secure source of funding for national governments. The Rothschilds had established five branches of their company. The largest and most important were based in Paris and London. The final Napoleonic war was largely financed by Nathan Rothschild of the family’s London branch. This house had provided large sums to both the British and the French. Personal growth and development is such a broad topic that it includes anything that can benefit you, be it mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Exploring the subject of personal growth requires that you first do a self-examination of yourself and then find the right tools to change and the brain power to improve.

Let’s run through some assumptions to try to find the right formula.

1. The choices you make and the actions you take are responsible for how your life turns out. What you get out of life is what you constantly put into it.

2. If you need to solve a problem, you must first identify it. By understanding that there is a problem and then wanting to change it, you are already halfway there.

3. Identifying the problems and obstacles in your life is not enough. You must set your destination. Know where you are going and what you want to achieve. Understanding who and what you want to become will help you plan your life.

4. For you to change something in your life, whether it is a habit or a one-time decision, there must be sacrifices on your part. Short-term costs can lead to long-term benefits. Work now so you can play later.

5. The way we think has a direct impact on the way we act, so it is always advisable to surround yourself with people with positive thoughts who can infect you with that positive energy. Reading positive material can also accumulate those affirmations in our subconscious, leading to changing our thinking in a way that will benefit us.

6. We are all on a journey trying to find our way in life. Through that journey, we all go through changes and develop accordingly. Taking the journey of your life into your own hands and setting the sails for your own destiny is critical. Waiting to see what fate and luck have in store for us is a big mistake. Don’t let others plan and control your life for you.

7. Leave your past behind and focus on the present and the future. If you ever need to reflect on your past, do so to see what you may have done wrong and what you need to work on.

8. Introducing some good habits into your life, like healthy eating and exercise, is a step forward. Letting go of some bad habits that you know are causing harm is also a good idea.

Understanding the above assumptions can help you understand what you need to do to prepare for a long journey of happiness and fulfillment. The biggest and most important step when it comes to achieving personal growth and development is to change the way you think. By shifting your mindset to a positive approach, you’ll find that you can always do better if you’re willing too. Things are not always pessimistic. Change your perspective on life and see what happens.

I have had the pleasure and the opportunity to do one of my favorite hobbies in the last two years, and that is teaching. I’ve had the opportunity to teach a number of different subjects in the field of computer science, from introductory courses to upper division courses, and I’ve seen a pattern among students that has been a puzzle to me, especially in upper division classes.

One of the main surprising facts that I have noticed is that most students have little to no hands-on experience in software development, especially in upper division classes. That is, they haven’t been given enough opportunity to do hands-on projects to improve and hone their programming skills in lower division classes, and when they take courses like Software Engineering, most of them don’t have the ability to create a system. fully functional from scratch.

Now I can understand if this is the first year for the student and they are just starting and getting to know their first computer language and all the tools and environments that are available to them. And it is also understandable that there are different levels of students with different levels of skills and motivation. But being in an upper division course and still uncomfortable with the basics scares me a little.

What I also noticed, and was honestly surprised, is that most students who are just starting out in the computer science curriculum have no idea what computer science is all about. Now, maybe this is an unfair statement, you can argue that they’re still unsure or undecided, but I think that’s not the case. If you are in a science or engineering curriculum then there are certain things that are critical for the student to know, such as a good foundation is math and physics.

Perhaps again, the issue is how we prepare our youth in their first years of life.

For example, as part of the computer science curriculum, students are required to take a Software Engineering course. I’m not going to discuss what software engineering is, but to illustrate, here’s a description from Wikipedia: Software engineering (SE) is the application of a systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approach to the design, development, operation, and maintenance of software and the study of these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software. The term software engineering first appeared at the 1968 NATO Software Engineering Conference and was meant to provoke thought about the perceived “software crisis” at the time. Software development, a widely used and more generic term, does not necessarily include the engineering paradigm.

In such a class, students are expected to have a good understanding of at least one programming language such as JAVA, C#, C++, etc., as well as a good understanding of Object Oriented Design and Methodology. In addition to programming skills, the student must have a good understanding of data structures and algorithms. Don’t forget, a program = data structures + algorithms! It would also help if students have knowledge of databases and etc…

These are just some of the technical skills they should have and keep sharp on a daily basis. The most important aspect of computing has nothing to do with JAVA or C# programming or anything like that. It has to do with the ability to ANALYZE and SOLVE PROBLEMS!

In my last class, I had created six different teams made up of three members each. Each group had the option of coming up with their own project to design and develop throughout the course, and if they couldn’t do it, I was going to assign them a project.

The students were very good at defining their own projects. We had a good variety of projects, from Hospital Management System to Hotel Management System, iPAD app for retail purchases and inventory, Android app for a simple 2D game, a Web Learning Management System and an app based on Windows that creates personalized MIMOS.

Now it was time to start the real deal! Let’s start designing our product!

Throughout the course, students were responsible for defining: the requirements and specifications, the design and implementation, and finally the testing and release (demo) of their software project.

What was amazing to me was that most of the students didn’t know where to start! Given a particular problem, how could one take it and dissect it into smaller parts in order to solve it in smaller pieces and arrive at final solutions by divide and conquer?

As mentioned, some teams did a very good job at each and every step, and others started weak and then increased their efforts and effectiveness throughout the course. As you can see, the projects themselves are somewhat complex for students, and all of them require knowledge of good user interface design, object-oriented design, database design, and for most, some form of communication! in network!

Some students didn’t even know programming and actually didn’t care much about spending the time to learn it! Relying mainly on their peers for the technical aspects of the project! Now, we shouldn’t expect all people to be gurus, but they should at least show some interest and have some self-motivation to learn on their own.

In general, most of the students in the class were very hard-working and really put a lot of time and effort into their respective projects. Most of them wanted to learn and be challenged. They simply lacked the proper skills that were necessary before taking this class.

There was a lot to do with the students in this particular class, and this put a lot of pressure on the students to push themselves and motivate themselves and have their own initiative. And that was exactly my goal not only in this class but in all of my classes. I want my students to push harder and think bigger and explore more areas and ideas because this is the only way to grow and be competitive later in their careers.

I myself am learning better ways and methods of lecturing and interacting with students with each passing term. I hope that the students are also making the necessary effort to expand their horizons not only during class, but also outside of the classroom!
