What to do and what not to do when stopped for speeding

Every time a law enforcement officer pulls you over, that is when the evidence for or against you begins. If it’s for a traffic offense like speeding, there are things you can do to basically eliminate your chances of successfully fighting your speeding ticket in court. When pulled over for speeding, follow these tips.

Initially, the goal is to get rid of the officer’s fears. The policeman has no idea who you are or what you are doing. They don’t know if you’re good or if you have a gun and you’re going to shoot them. There is an element of fear on your part. As you approach the car, even if you haven’t found your license and registration, it’s best to keep your hands visible on the wheel. If he’s digging around your car, they might think he’s getting a gun. If they feel safe, they will be much calmer.

Don’t be rude or arrogant. Saying things like “I’m going to take this to court” or “Who do you think you are?” it won’t help you at all. He or she will find it extremely rude and, in fact, can expect to see you in court so the officer can see that he or she gets a ticket. Being rude also increases the chances of him getting a ticket instead of a warning.

The most important thing to keep in mind is admitting fault for speeding. You don’t have to admit to speeding and you don’t have to make an excuse for why you were speeding. This is self-incrimination that you never legally have to do. If you give an excuse as to why you were speeding, then the officer can bring it up in court by telling the judge that he admitted to the crime, therefore he should be found guilty. If you plan to fight your speeding ticket in court, don’t make this mistake.
