The pros and cons of taking breast enlargement pills

Today, many natural breast enhancement pills are advertised and sold on the Internet, on television, and in women’s magazines.

Most of these supplements specifically target women’s insecurities about their breasts, particularly after giving birth, losing weight, and having breast implants removed. A large number of women today prefer to delve into alternative means, especially those that do not require surgical methods.

Many are tempted to try these supplements, even though most don’t realize that there may be little to no evidence for the safety of the breast enhancement pills being sold. Consumers are advised to check the claims for a selected supplement with the Food and Drug Administration to determine the potency and safety of each product.

Are most breast enlargement pills safe?

According to a report published in an American Society of Plastic Surgeons journal, breast enhancement pills may not work and could have serious side effects, especially when combined with other medications. At least 20 to 30 different herbal supplements for breast enhancement are promoted on the Internet, on television, and in magazines; however, that doesn’t mean they work effectively, according to a report on safety and effectiveness that recently appeared in the society’s journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

“Herbal breast enhancement products have become a lucrative industry in recent years due to their ‘guaranteed’ safety and low cost compared to surgery,” the researchers write. However, these assurances are not based on any long-term randomized clinical trials,” the report added.

Because breast enhancement pills are sold as supplements, they are not subject to extensive scrutiny by the FDA. Many of the commercially available herbal ingredients in pills have only anecdotes and limited short-term studies to back up their enhancement claims, the report notes.

Herbs can also have side effects, especially when taken with other medications, the researchers warn. For example, the report notes that black cohosh can negatively interact with cancer drugs such as tamoxifen, and that chaste tree berry can interfere with the potency of birth control pills, making them less effective.

Another herb, fenugreek, could meddle with diabetes drugs and drugs designed to slow clotting, researchers say. They also warn that the active ingredients in the herb dong quai may be linked to cancer. Other herbs used in breast enhancement pills include saw palmetto, kava, fennel seed, damiana, dandelion, wild yam, and blessed thistle.

“As with any herbal supplement, side effects and drug interactions have yet to be established,” the study adds. “People who choose to use these supplements should be aware that herbal medications have potential adverse side effects, especially if taken in conjunction with other medications.”

Do breast enlargement supplements work?

However, natural breast enlargement pills, according to health experts and analysts, could theoretically work to increase breast size, as some of them contain herbal ingredients known to contain and have estrogen-like effects on the body. It is generally believed that the use of birth control pills temporarily increases breast size in the same way that estrogen causes fluid retention in the breasts and may have a natural, positive effect on breast tissue.
