Safety tips when biking at night

Bicycling is fun, the feeling of the gust of wind on your face and the exercise on your calves and hamstrings are reason enough to get you out and about no matter what time of day. Whether you want to head out on your bike for a quick ride to the convenience store or you’re trying to burn off that extra helping of ice cream you ate over the weekend or you’re the ultra fitness buff who wants that cardio workout that you get from cycling, you should always put your safety first when biking after sunset.

Unlike taking a ride during the day, riding a bike at night unfortunately poses some safety concerns that should be of concern to any cyclist. Unless you emit a green glow, you may not be easily seen by other motorists until your headlights hit the reflectors on your pedals or seat.

Wearing bright colored clothing would help other motorists on the road to see you at a much greater distance compared to when you wear dark clothing. There is cycling gear that is now sold in neon orange or green. However, these clothes would only help if there is a bit of light.

There are bicycle safety lights now being sold in the market. These lights mount to the bottom of your seat or frame or even your handlebars and provide the necessary illumination for other motorists to see you on the road. On a moonless night, you can even attach a headlight, allowing you to see where you’re going and let other motorists see you, too.

These security lights are battery operated and very lightweight. The hassle-free and easy installation can be installed on any model and make of bike.

So the next time you decide to ride your bike at night, take the time to consider road safety and fit safety lights on your bike. A safe workout is a good workout!
