Dragon Tales: Jilocasin

It is said that in Gascogne, under the reign of Charlemagne, lived an ancient dragon named Jilocasin, who was a great poet. He would sometimes leave his great lair and travel to the royal court disguised as a human minstrel to perform his verses and share his art. In one of these rooms, walking through the forest, he heard a terrible scream.

He ran towards the noise and found a beautiful maiden being raped at the hands of bandits. She immediately transformed into a dragon and killed the rascals. The maiden, who had fainted, he carried on her wings to her lair.

His servants attended to the lady, who was attired in the clothes of a high lady of the court, and found in a bundle that hugged a small child who was unaware of the tumult of the day.

The dragon returned to his human form and visited the lady who told him her terrible story.

“My husband died just two years after we were married. My family forced me to marry my cousin, who cared only for my dear husband’s title and wealth. However, she was pregnant with my first husband’s child. When he was born my son six months After the wedding, my evil cousin sent minions after me to kill the baby and protect his inheritance. The ruffians almost succeeded when you came and rescued me.

Jilocasin was so moved by his story that he offered to stay at his home.

As time passed, they fell deeply in love. She knew her true form, but she was so fond of it that it didn’t matter. They spent all the time together. They took long walks in the woods. They would sing the verses that the poet-dragon composed. And in his dragon form, he would carry her on his back and they would fly to faraway lands. For three years they lived together in happiness.
