Valentine’s Day is the day America celebrates our loved ones. We tend to buy expensive gifts and elaborate cards to show our family and friends how much we love them. But did you know that this tradition began around the year 270 AD. C. in an ancient pagan festival that celebrated fertility on February 15? The name was believed to come from a priest named Valentine who was beheaded on February 14 because he performed illegal marriage ceremonies. And because a signed note addressed to his love was found on the morning of his death, Valentine’s Day was born.

As a married woman, I love receiving gifts of affection from my husband and rack my brains to think of something different each year to show my love for him. I even give my 12-year-old little candy and “be mine” note cards to show tokens of love, too. This is what we have been conditioned to do. But is this really showing our loved ones what true love is? What are we doing daily to show God’s love between us and our children? Should buying an expensive gift justify our true love for each other? Well, some of us may say, “it’s nice to get gifts, what’s wrong with that?” Nothing, if you really practice and know the true meaning of love, that no gift can replace. And as Christian parents, we need to make sure our children know how much God loves them, so they don’t grow up searching and trying to fill a void for someone or something that might disappoint them. Here are 8 ways to teach your child about God’s love through his word:

1) In this we know what love is: Jesus Christ gave his life for us. And we must give our lives for our brothers. 1 John 3:15-17

2) The grace, mercy and peace of God the Father and of Jesus Christ the Son of the Father, will be with us in truth and love. 2 John 1:2-4

3) Keep yourselves in the love of God while you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to lead you to eternal life. Jude 1:20-22

4) Jesus replied: “Do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 19:18-20

5) Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:36-38

6) Give thanks to the God of gods. His love is forever. Psalm 136:1-3

7) But if anyone obeys his word, the love of God is truly completed in him. This is how we know we are in it. 1 John 2:4-6

This Valentine’s Day, let’s teach our children that God’s love is the true meaning of love. And then our “spiritual gifts” will be a little more valuable this year and for years to come. we owe them so much…

One might be surprised to learn that the largest influx into the homeschool field today are professional teachers. The reasons they give are very interesting.

• In the 1960s, teachers had more of a say in what happened in their classrooms. However, the government has more control these days. It is important to know that the Vietnam War taught us that the war cannot be won from the White House. Likewise, the teacher, who is in the trenches (metaphorically speaking) knows what her children need. Unlike the bureaucracy, Ella sees them as human beings and not statistics. Heck, school lunches were even so much better in the ’60s.
• Teachers rightly complain that they must now teach their children to pass government-mandated tests that require them to sacrifice teaching the basics.
• Class sizes have become so large that children are being taught to act like robots instead of individuals. Teachers are forced to teach as a one-size-fits-all…they are less able to individualize their curriculum.
• Recess and play time are shrinking. Many teachers complain that this creates stress and forces little ones to fit into unhealthy and unnatural molds.

Teachers are getting a butt wrap when blamed for the increasing decline in the US public school system, and few people listen to “those in the trenches.” Government bureaucracy is more likely to blame. Is it any wonder so many teachers choose to homeschool their own families?

Most homeschool students outperform public school kids on college entrance exams. Obviously, most parents are doing something right, whether or not they have teaching credentials.

Are there any sad stories about children who are not receiving a proper education at their place of origin school? The answer is yes, but you find more such stories in the public school system. Government intervention is not a solution. The awareness and participation of parents (“those in the trenches”) is the solution. That is the case whether one has children in home school or public school systems.

This is not said to put an impossible burden or even blame the parents. I say this to empower parents. The solution to education today comes remarkably from you, the people.

We don’t eat chicken just because it’s delicious, but it also provides many health benefits. First of all, it is high in protein, which makes it excellent for helping with weight loss. cooking instructions:

1. Get a large Ziploc bag or something similar. Pour your vinegar into the bag, followed by your choice of herbs, garlic and onion powder, salt, pepper, your choice of mustard, and your extra virgin olive oil. You can use Dijon mustard or whole grain mustard, whichever you like best. Once the ingredients are in the bag, shake them well to create an evenly distributed mixture.

2. Open your zip-top bag and place the chicken breasts inside. Reseal and shake vigorously to perfectly coat chicken meat. Place the bag inside the refrigerator to marinate the chicken. Let it soak in the marinade overnight (or longer) for best results.

3. When it’s time to cook your chicken breasts, take them out of the fridge and let them thaw under cold water. You can leave the tap running to defrost even faster. If you don’t like using water for this task, you can thaw it in the microwave as long as your bag is microwave-safe.

4. While you wait for your meat, go ahead and prepare your La Caja China. Put the grill and ashtray on the box. Put your natural coals on and light them when your chicken breasts are almost ready to grill.

5. After about 20 minutes of lighting the coals, they should be done. Spread the coals evenly on the grate making sure to leave a gap at one end. That should be your cool section in case one or two of your chicken breasts almost burned.

6. Start putting your chicken breasts on the grill one by one and remember not to put the lid on your La Caja China. You should also grill one side of the chicken for only 5 minutes. Then, flip the chicken to the other side and let it cook again for another 5. Repeat this process until you reach your desired result.

7. Remove chicken breasts from grill and allow to cool on a plate. Serve with rice or your choice of garnish such as corn and carrots; good steamed broccoli or your favorite salad. Enjoy!

While buying some games as a gift from Angel Tree, I realized that many games nowadays are electronic games. It made me start thinking about my own childhood days and the games we used to play.

Because we were poor, many of our games were free or very cheap. I remember one of our favorite indoor games was playing a card game called “Go Fishing” or “Go Fish.” It is usually played with two to five players. Usually both adults and children would join in on a game of Go Fish.

Using a standard deck of cards, 7 cards are dealt to each of the players. The rest of the deck is spread out in the center of the table. The first player will ask another player to give him his cards of a particular rank. For example, “Give me all your Queens.” The requesting player cannot request a card that he does not have in his hand.

If the requested player has cards of the requested value, he turns them over and the requesting player wins another turn. If the asked player does not have any cards of the requested rank, he says “go fishing” or “go fishing”. The requesting player draws a card from the pot in the center of the table.

When a player has four cards of a given rank, then he has “a book” and places that book face up in front of him on the table. When a player runs out of cards, he draws a card from the stack and play continues until all cards are gone from the stack. At that moment the game ends and the player with the most books wins.

We had several different card games that we could play with the same deck of cards.

When the weather was nice and we could play outside, we’d entertain ourselves with a neighborhood game of baseball or softball or grab a stick and hit a game of hopscotch in the dirt or a sandy area.

We lived in a rural area and our preference was to play outdoors. We would walk through the woods and go down to the nearby pool to swim on a hot day.

Kids today start very young with learning DVDs, TV entertainment and as they get older there are all the video games consuming hours upon hours of their time.

That’s not to say that these games can’t be shared between adults and children. For example, Mario Kart Wii is a game loved by both racing fanatic parents and kids alike.

Learning DVDs can help a child get a head start on things like their AB-C, even before they start daycare.

And even before that, parents can get an entertaining DVD that helps the child learn to go to the toilet.

Little girls still have dolls; they are simply more sophisticated. Dolls today are almost like a real baby. Years ago, families had so many children that I guess we just had something real to learn about what babies really do.

Little kids still have toy trucks, but I guess you don’t have to push them by hand anymore.

There’s nothing too good or bad about old and present, however sometimes it’s fun to just look back and compare. It’s even fun to share some of the older games with your kids and play them together.

Granted, it took me months to finally purchase Trace Adkins’ Greatest Hits “American Man” Volume II. I listen to all kinds of music, even country, and I’ve always liked Adkins, but the main reason I bought this CD was because of the song “You’re Gonna Miss This.” I remember hearing the song several times on the radio earlier in the year, and of course seeing Adkins sing the song at the end of Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” I hadn’t listened to the song for a long time and I just bought the CD and listened to it several times already.

It’s the words of the song that really struck me. The first verse talks about a girl who can’t wait to grow up and her mom tells her that she’s going to miss him. The second verse has the girl as a newlywed and telling her dad that the small apartment is only temporary while she talks about babies and a bigger house etc. Her father tells her to slow down, he’s going to miss it. The final verse is five years later with the woman apologizing to the plumber for her house being occupied by her with the phone ringing, the baby crying, and another child screaming. He tells her that he doesn’t care since she has two babies of her own, one 36 and the other 23. He tells her it’s hard to believe, but you’re going to miss it.

Wow Trace, this song reminds me of another song on the CD, “Songs About Me”. But this song is about all of us.

I find myself thinking about my younger days. Man, I wanted to grow up and get out of high school and get out of the house sometimes when I was young. Boy do I miss some of those days now that I look back on it. I remember sometimes I hated the army. FTA was a rallying cry that didn’t mean “Take Top’s advice” as a friend of mine told the first sergeant. (Above) one day when they surprised him writing his initials in the snow behind the barracks. I can remember times in college, times in Japan, times in Korea, many times during law school, not wanting to be there, how I wanted things to change. I look back now and miss those times so much. Well, maybe not in law school, but it doesn’t seem as bad now as I thought it would at the time.

Now that I’m a parent, this lesson hits home even stronger. My little girl, Cosette, is four years old and has just started preschool. She is growing up so fast and I already miss some of those days when she was little. She still enjoys all the new things we do every day, especially since she’s like her dad in that she loves books. She is trying very hard to learn to read and write. The first day of preschool she told her teacher that she still couldn’t read well. Her teacher told her that she was fine, and then she told my wife and me that it wasn’t until kindergarten that they started teaching zoophonics, a system for learning letter sounds and phonics. I thought to myself, “she already knows the sounds that all the letters make, by next year and kindergarten she will be reading. I guess she will be ahead of the curve like me.”

So while I really enjoy helping her with her reading and writing, I also miss some of the things that when she was very little now happen.

But here’s the kicker. There are times when I’m pressured with work, bills, writing projects, my teaching, and other goals I’m working to achieve that I’m short on the time I have for her. Tonight, for example, I only have a short time to come home from work, eat, spend some time with her, and then go to the gym to work out and teach hapkido. I think of the Adkins song and realize I’m going to miss this. I am going to miss these times and therefore I need to make sure I take as much time as possible because it will go by so quickly.

Everyone tells the younger generation that time passes faster as we get older. They say it because it’s true. Each year goes faster than the last. It makes the “The time is now, the place is here” lessons, which Dan Millman teaches in his Peaceful Warrior workouts, all the more important. It’s not that they’re not always important, it’s just that as you get older you pay more attention to it.

Or at least you should. Some people don’t, and that’s sad. Because they are the ones who will probably miss it the most. Miss what? Miss life. I recently wrote about life, after learning about a friend’s 41-year-old relative who died of a heart attack. We must not miss life. We shouldn’t be too eager to get to the next stage, because believe me, you are coming too fast, that is if you are lucky enough to get to the next stage. Many people write about this concept in different ways. I have written on the subject and I also talk about it. I am sure that I will continue to write and speak on the subject in the future in various ways. Because? Because it is important. It’s very important!
