The school year is almost over and you haven’t even had a chance to think about what to do with your kids this summer.

Maybe your vacation budget is tight or even non-existent this year. But you still want to create fun family memories that your children will cherish for a long time.

What can you do?

Well, here are 5 fun activity ideas you can do that won’t cost you a fortune:

1. Treasure hunt

Children love treasure hunts. The beauty of a scavenger hunt is that they can be modified to fit just about any theme and age level. The basis of a scavenger hunt is that each child or team has a list of things that they need to find and the first team to bring back all the items on the list is the winner.

How to create a treasure hunt:

Decide what kinds of things you will include on your scavenger hunt, and make a list. Give out a list for each team, lay out the ground rules (ie stay in the yard, no entry, etc.) and let them search for the items!

2. Obstacle Course

An obstacle course requires children to overcome a series of challenges that you have created for them. The obstacle course should be age-appropriate so the kids can have fun with a bit of a challenge and if you have kids of a wide range of ages try to make the elements to suit each child.

Ideas for Barriers:

or shooting practice. Use a hose to knock empty milk jugs off a table.

o Egg and spoon race. Carry an egg on a spoon from point A to point B.

o Launch of water balloons. Fill a bunch of water balloons and have the kids launch them at each other or at a target.

or Slide. Be sure to use your swing set or slide if you have one – run around it three times. Go down the slide. Do a somersault in the rings, etc.

o Shuttle race. Have two lines about ten yards apart. On one line have one bean bag and on the other have two. Kids start in line with a bean bag, run to the next line and pick up a bean bag. Then they run back, take it down and take the one that’s there. They go back to the other line, pick up the last beanbag, put down the one they have, and run back to the line.

or bucket of sand. Have the children fill a small bucket with sand using a spoon or small measuring cup before they can continue.

or limbo. Set up a limbo station and ask them to go over or under the bar without touching it.

o Balance beam. Set up a two by four (either on the ground or on bricks or benches depending on the age of your kids) and have them balance for this obstacle.

3. Celebrity chef

Let your child be the celebrity chef of the family dinner. You can plan the entire meal and then serve it to the rest of the family.

How to create a celebrity chef meal:

Have your child choose the main dish, sides, and dessert. Together, look at the recipes and make a shopping list. Spend the afternoon preparing the food and setting the table. Enjoy the dinner!

Variations:

o If you have more than one child, have each child plan and prepare a course.

o Give them a theme and let them discover the foods that go with it.

o Challenge them by giving them a certain food to use for each meal they prepare.

o Help your child come up with their own dessert recipe.

o Teach your child some basic cake decorating skills and then decorate a cake together.

4.Video production

Kids love seeing themselves on the big screen (ie their TV)! This is a great activity for dramatic actors and even those who aren’t dramatic enough to do behind the scenes work for the production.

How to create a video production:

Talk to your children about planning the type of production they will make: a short film, a public service announcement, a commercial, a music video, etc. Then write a script (or at least describe what they will say and do). Finally, discuss and organize costumes and accessories.

5. Library Detective

This is an interesting twist on a treasure hunt.

How to create a library detective event:

Set up your tracks ahead of time, and then, if necessary, have the kids look at books in the library while you set up (or, if possible, go a few minutes early and have someone else bring them over).

Their clues may require them to explore different ways to search for books (by author, by subject, and by title), as well as how to find books once they’ve searched.

Give them the first clue. This clue should lead them to a book that contains the second clue, and so on. The clues should be written on colored paper and placed inside the book on a certain page so that they are easy to find once the book is found.

The pros and cons of dieting can be tricky. There really is nothing wrong with dieting if you do it right. I know someone who lost 3 pounds a week over the course of a year by eating three healthy meals a day and exercising for at least an hour a day. There was nothing unhealthy in his diet, so no cons. The disadvantages of dieting usually come from an unhealthy diet that is too extreme. The sad thing is that most of these extremes never helped anyone lose weight in the long run.

A healthy eating plan without exercise will not help you lose weight. Similarly, a vigorous daily exercise program but poor eating habits won’t help you lose weight either. You need to exercise vigorously and eat smart if you want to burn body fat. The pros and cons of dieting may not be what you’re thinking. The good thing about your plan may be your eating habits, but the bad thing is not exercising.

Many people have a hard time understanding that moderation is really important. You can’t overdo anything and you can’t undercut anything either. A reasonable eating plan and a reasonable exercise plan can help anyone lose weight.

The diets that everyone fails on are the ones that promise to lose a lot of weight in a few days. These extreme diets do not work in the long term. Since no one can sustain that kind of weight loss, people on these diets feel really down and depressed. They are working very hard to put in such a big effort, but they are not losing the amount of weight that the diet says they should be able to lose. As a result, they get very depressed and just give up. Unfortunately, after they give up, the weight starts to creep back up as much as before.

The first thing you need to do to be successful in losing weight is to set up a one year weight loss plan. Whether you want to lose 30 pounds or a hundred pounds, do it in a year. If you want to lose 30 pounds, start by trying to lose one pound a week. You will reach your goal in 30 weeks. If you want to lose 100 pounds, set a goal of 2 pounds per week. You will reach your goal in one year. The key here is to think long term. If you only want to lose 30 pounds and manage to do it in two months, those 30 pounds will come back on in just 2-3 weeks. Because? Because to lose 30 pounds in two months you would have to have done a very extreme lack of nutrition and a lot of vigorous exercise. After the two months are up, you will be very tired from all the exercise and how little you ate. The first thing you want to do is just relax and go back to your old eating style. Nothing brings an athlete down faster both mentally and physically than a debilitating injury. Whether it’s the smallest pain or an injury that requires surgery, all competitors, young and old, will feel discouraged, frustrated and agitated. As a very competitive and active athlete, I can attest that nothing is more agonizing than an injury that prevents me from doing what I love to do most. Even as I write this I am now suffering from tendinitis in both knees and a strained shoulder muscle that is preventing me from training for my next triathlon. I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself an “expert” when it comes to treating injuries, but perhaps “experienced veteran” would be a more appropriate title for me.

So what can YOU do to ease the nagging pain for yourself or your loved ones? As I’m sure, many of you have heard the acronym RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), which many physicians will recommend for those treating sports-related injuries. We all have the ability to follow such guidelines for healing, but not everyone knows how to comfort themselves during recovery. So, I have some personal recommendations you can use to relieve pain and provide some much-needed relief and comfort to yourself or a loved one.

While resting the injured part of the body, one may find themselves in their favorite chair or sofa for an extended period of time, especially after surgery. It always makes a big difference to have the right pillow to maximize comfort while you rest. Not only does this reduce stress on your neck and head when lying down or sitting down, but more importantly, the pillow can be used to rest an injured arm (or leg), keeping it elevated and stationary. Elevation is important to reduce swelling in the injured area, which promotes faster healing. A soft bead pillow is an excellent choice for this, particularly in a cylindrical shape, which improves support for aches and pains behind the neck or in the lower back. A pillow with buckwheat or polystyrene is essential so that the pillow is malleable and flexible enough to conform to any part of the body.

Ice is also extremely important in reducing swelling and pain. I have also found the warm up and cool down process to be extremely relaxing and helps me get back moving faster. There are a few items you might find helpful for warming up and cooling down, including a warming/cooling balm, which is great for sports injuries, or a warming/cooling wrap. Especially after football games, when I was getting hit and bruised, nothing felt better and more relaxing than a warm/cooling balm on my sore muscles and a body wrap on my stiff shoulders and back.

I have also found that while elevating, icing, or resting in bed or on the couch, my feet get very cold and uncomfortable, so I always wear a very comfortable pair of socks. Bamboo socks have become my favorite because they are extremely comfortable and warm, yet provide exceptional breathability.

Another need that many do not consider or attribute to faster healing is the inclusion of water in your routine. I always recommend having an easy-to-use (preferably non-spillable) water bottle by my side when sitting on the couch, so I can maintain a steady intake of water for general nutrition or pain relievers. In addition, snacks are always a necessity when it comes to resting and healing, especially healthy snacks, since one is usually immobile and cannot exercise properly. Therefore, I recommend natural fruit chips, nut snacks and small cookies, avoiding processed foods with high amounts of sugar and fat, which do not aid healing.

Naturally, when one is confined to the sofa for long periods of time, one is bound to get bored. Therefore, it is always good to have an uplifting book, magazine or game to keep your brain stimulated. Personally, I prefer brain teasers like crossword puzzles, sudoku puzzles, or joke books to keep myself entertained and keep my spirits up.

Emotional support is just as important as physical support, so offering your time and services to a friend or loved one can be just as helpful as a gift. This can include running errands or small, simple tasks for someone who is injured, like taking out the trash or preparing a meal. Even the smallest daily tasks can add up and will reduce unnecessary stress for those disabled by injury. But, if you are not around to provide such services, then a gift of useful products that will help and stimulate the healing process is a great option. By following any of my recommendations, you or a loved one will likely feel much more comfortable and relieved during recovery from a sports injury or surgery. This is a hands-on lesson that uses $7 in real or pretend money to teach children the importance of spending time with God every day. The suggested Bible verse to reinforce the teaching is Proverbs 3:6. This article offers a suggested breakdown, but feel free to adjust it based on the children you minister to.

Lesson:

Today we are going to talk about how you can spend more time with God. To help with that, I have $7 and each dollar will represent 1 hour. Part of the time he spends each week is at church, Sunday school, and midweek service, so let’s set aside three dollars for that.

Now let’s think of some things you can do for yourself to spend time with God. First, it’s a good idea to read the Bible every day, but that doesn’t mean you should spend hours doing it. If you haven’t been reading it every day, start with a small amount of time and add little by little. For example, if you read just ten minutes a day, six days a week, that would be an hour with God. (Show up another dollar.) Start with Mark’s or John’s book and read for ten minutes. The next day, start where you left off and read for ten minutes, and so on.

When you read the Bible, God speaks to you. What do we call him when you talk to God? Prayer, that’s right. It is also a good idea to talk to God. If you spent ten minutes a day praying at least six days a week, how much time would you have? Another hour, that is. (Show up the fifth dollar.) That gives us two hours a week with God in a way that all of us can do. You can find ten minutes to read and ten minutes to pray each day without any problem.

It’s a good start, but we can do better. The Bible tells us in Psalm 119:11 that if we keep the word of God in our hearts, it will help us not to sin. An easy way to memorize a verse is to copy it onto a 3×5 card. Then, on the first day, read it (out loud if possible) three or four times. Then quote as much as you can and read the rest. Do this until you have read the verse ten times.

The next day, take out your card, quote as much as you can, and read the rest. Do that ten times. Do that every day for a week and by the end of the week you will probably find that you are quoting the verse ten times instead of reading it. That will give you another hour a week with God. (Show another dollar.)

We have mentioned talking to God. In fact, he wants us to talk to him more than once a day. This is my challenge to you on how you can spend more time talking to God throughout the day.

– Before you get up in the morning, take a minute to thank God for something he has done.

– As you get ready for school, take a minute to pray for your parents and siblings.

– As you go to school, take a minute to pray for the bus driver or a friend who doesn’t know Jesus.

– Before your first class take a minute to pray for your teacher and for God to help you listen well in class.

– While you’re in the lunch line, take a minute to thank God for something you’ve done.

– Before your first class after lunch, take a minute to pray for your teacher or classmates and ask God to help you listen well.

– On your way home from school, take a minute to thank God for what you learned that day and pray for the bus driver.

– Before beginning your homework, take a minute to ask God for help.

– When you are getting ready for bed, take a minute to pray that God will continually help you grow closer to him.

– When you go to bed, take a minute to thank God for the day he gave you.

If you pray those ten times every day, you will have another hour of time with God each week. That gives us seven hours averaging one hour a day spent with God.

Also, if you do that, you have a wonderful promise from God that is found in Proverbs 3:6. (Read or quote the verse.) When you take a minute to talk to God about school work, or to pray for a lost friend, or to ask God for help, you are acknowledging him. His promise is that he will make your paths straight. He will guide you and show you what to do. Isn’t that a great promise? Will you choose to spend more time with God this week?

The fact that adolescents go through a transition period is not in dispute. We see it in our homes, on TV, at the mall. Almost everywhere we go, there are these teenagers, making their transition very obvious! For many adults, this period is uncomfortable to witness. We may find it scary, sad, or offensive. Some of us have the luxury of ignoring it, since we don’t have teenagers in our lives. But some of us don’t have a choice; We are surrounded by Teen Spirit! We often feel powerless to help; we are busy, they are scary, we feel incompetent, they reject our offers. The truth is, they DO need our help; How else are they going to learn to become happy and productive adults?

I’ve been playing with the Caterpillar-a-Butterfly analogy lately. The caterpillar/adolescent continues, happily chewing on leaves, when nature calls for a change. The caterpillar/adolescent enters its own little world and withdraws from “society”. This period is a mystery to biologists, but within this structure (the cocoon) nature is capable of transforming the hairy, spiny caterpillar/adolescent into a beautiful butterfly/adult.

It’s a nice comparison, right? Note, however, that something is off: where’s the analog cocoon when it comes to teenagers? Imagine that a butterfly forms out of the cocoon. It couldn’t happen. What secure structure is available for his delicate and dramatic transformation? If you take the time to observe teenagers, you realize that they feel more passionate about their lives when they belong to a system. For some it’s a strong family system, for others it’s school, a sports team, a club or a religious group. Others may find their purpose and passion through the responsibilities of holding down a job. Unfortunately, when left alone and with few tools to cope with impending adulthood, teens will create their own structure to give them a sense of security. Unfortunately, for some, a gang, drugs, or having babies provide structure that is lacking elsewhere.

How can parents create structure for their children?

1. A strong sense of family is crucial. It doesn’t matter what the family looks like as long as there is a strong sense of unity and common purpose.

2.All children need to feel safe. For a child this means that her parents are dependent, trustworthy, and consistent in her behavior. It means that, when making decisions that affect their children, parents take into account their children’s unique physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and psychological needs and limitations, as well as their strengths. It means that parents can be parents, even when it’s inconvenient, exhausting, or scary, and kids can be kids, even when it’s boring, “unfair,” or restrictive.

3. To learn about respect, compassion, and kindness, children need to see them demonstrated DAILY in their home. Love and acceptance should never (NEVER) be denied. We may disapprove or despair of our child’s behavior (and administer an appropriate consequence or arrange for an intervention such as coaching or counseling) and still offer words of love and acceptance, because that’s when our children probably need it most.

Just as the caterpillar needs a structure to fulfill its destiny and complete its natural, even divine transformation, so too an adolescent MUST have a structure to fulfill its sacred purpose in life. If a parent or other adult does not provide such a structure during adolescence, it can be rebuilt by the wounded and healing adult later in life. Regardless, structure is imperative.

If for any reason feral baby mice have been brought into your care, I’ve included some tips on care and feeding to help you give them a chance at life. Keep in mind that even in the wild, mice have a 50/50 chance of surviving beyond 5 months of age, with normal breeding. Mice that do so can live up to around 5 years if they are healthy. A couple will have a better chance of survival than a lone mouse.

As soon as you have baby mice, it’s important to keep them safe and warm. You can use a small pet carrier, a large plastic tub, or any other suitable box that you can put them in. Cover the bottom with a towel and place the mice on top. Then use another soft material to lightly cover the mice like fleece. Put the box in a warm place, making sure that it is not hot; otherwise, the mice will become dehydrated. A heater on the lowest setting may be all that is needed. Try the towel the mice are lying on so that it feels comfortable and warm in your hand.

If the baby mice are less than 14 days old, they will need drip feeding with a milk replacer until they are weaned. They usually open their eyes when they are about to be weaned and are able to eat on their own. You will need to feed them every 2 hours, so be prepared to get up during the night. Set your alarm. When I was taking care of wild mice, I would get up every 2 hours to check on them. I have since read that during the night the mother mouse would be out of her nest looking for food and that she would only return to the nest once to feed her young. Use common sense, if she can manage a few night feedings, all the better for the babies’ chances of survival, especially in the first few days.

Kitten milk is available to purchase at pet stores. I used blended and strained raw coconut. It should be 1 cup of coconut for approximately 2 and ½ cups of water. You can also use soaked almonds to make an almond milk using the same proportions. Make sure the nuts are natural and plain. Once you have prepared the milk, store it in a sterilized glass jar and keep it in the refrigerator until you need it. When you go to feed the mice, take a quarter cup of milk and heat it by pouring it into a small jug and placing it in hot water. Use a baby dropper or syringe (you can get these at the drug store) to feed 1-2 drops of milk at a time into the baby mouse’s mouth. When mice are very young, they may not open their mouths. Be careful not to let the milk get into their noses, otherwise they will vomit or cough. Doing so can be dangerous to your health. The way I fed the mice was by placing a washcloth on a table and placing one mouse at a time on it. You can then gently support the baby’s head while you give the milk through the dropper. You will master it with a little practice. It may seem that the baby is not taking much milk, do not worry. Very young babies may only need a drop or two in their mouth/tongue until they can take more. The main goal here is to keep them hydrated with a small drop every two hours.

After the baby is fed, it is necessary to stimulate a bowel movement. To do this, put some warm water in a small bowl and dip a cotton swab into it. Then, place the cotton swab between the baby’s hind legs and gently twist it. You should see a small brown spot, that’s your poop. Dip the other end of the cocoon into the water and gently stroke the baby’s body, this emulates the mother licking it. After all that, put the baby to bed on his soft bedding and place him in a warm place. This is the basic routine that should be repeated every two hours during the day and at least 2-3 times at night, especially around 1am and 5am.

As you can see, it’s quite a commitment to care for baby wild mice. But, there is also a great reward in caring for them and the bond you will feel as a caregiver.

When babies start to open their eyes or at least peak, they may be drinking a lot more milk and starting to walk around a bit. This is when you need to be very careful; one fall is enough to be fatal. You can make a small safe area to roam in the bottom of a pet cage or shoe box/sink. Line it with newspaper and leaves to simulate a natural environment. The little ones will enjoy stretching their legs and taking their first steps. This is important as it will build your muscles and strength.

Once babies start to bite your fingers fairly firmly when you feed them, they may be ready for some solid food. They will also start to open their eyes (12-14 days old) Start very slowly with this. Try some baby fruit puree to start or a plain rice pudding. Food should not be cooled. Let them lick your finger. Avoid putting the mashes out on a plate for the mice to feed on, as they could make a mess and end up with matted fur, which should be avoided. Some other foods to graduate to are porridge, banana, tomato, dry rolled oats, and strawberries. Just go easy on the food and keep it simple and easy to digest to start with. Congratulations! In fact, you’ve reached the weaning stage, which is a pretty big deal with wild baby mice.

Continue to provide a safe space for the mice to sleep, and once weaned they will be able to come out at night to feed. Put a plate near their bed so they can feed at night. At least you can get some sleep now! Continue to offer milk throughout the day and provide some water. Wild mice will usually continue to have some mother’s milk until about 4 weeks of age.

Now you have to decide whether to keep them or release them into the wild. I don’t know how many mice have been successfully hand reared and released into the wild. I think it is unlikely that they can survive. However, you’ve done your part, and if they seem strong, healthy, and fairly active, you may be able to release them. However, you can keep them as pets.

Finally, if you did your best and the mice died, don’t feel bad. The chances of survival in the best conditions, that is, with its natural mother, are still low. Just enjoy the experience you’ve had with them and the chance to get a glimpse into their little lives. They are little bundles of love and it is wonderful to have given them at least a little love when they might otherwise have perished.

Unstructured free play It is the best type of game for young children. This is creative play that just happens, depending on what your child is interested in at the time. Free play allows your child to use her movement at her own pace and use her imagination, it’s not planned. Unstructured play could be: Explore a new or favorite play space. Imaginative play, such as making cubicle houses out of boxes or blankets, dress-up, or pretend play. Quality creative play alone or with others, including artistic or musical games. It may or may not be part of your child’s unstructured play. Sometimes all you’ll have to do is point them in the right direction: toward the jumble of costumes and toys on the floor, or toward the table with crayons and paper. Sometimes you may need to be a little more active. Suggesting, ‘How about we play dress up? What would you like to be today?’

structured play is different. Most of the time it is led by an adult. It is more organized and occurs in a certain space or at a fixed time.
