My husband, Eldad, was on his way to a crowded animal shelter to see a dog that he said “had a horrible picture.” Labeled as a terrier mix, and has already stayed over a week. We are full-time dog rescuers, so we are used to the inevitable.

I got a call: “You won’t believe how cute this dog is and he’s already spayed so he’s coming home with me today.” Later that afternoon, I walked into our home to be greeted by our two white rescue terriers and this furry ball of fluff who licked me like I was his best friend. “Oh, you look like a pumpkin,” I told her. And so Pumpkin instantly became part of the family. We’d have to find her a foster home eventually, but she was so soft and potty trained and so perfect/

Two days later, Eldad and I had to go talk to a class of children at an author’s festival about the dogs and other creatures we had raised in our home. We had no idea what we were going to say, so we brought our book and brought Pumpkin as an example of how a rescue dog is a friendly and lovable dog. I just hoped Pumpkin wasn’t too skittish. He had her tied up and planned to have her on my lap the entire time.

The children were in second grade and very polite and caring and I realized that they were too young to really be exposed to the term “euthanasia” and that it would be inappropriate to tell horror stories of abused animals. Eldad presented a power point presentation of photos of many of the dogs and cats and other critters that we had had in the house. The kids went ooh and aah and then suddenly Pumpkin jumped out of my lap. As if possessed, Pumpkin dove into the crowd of children like she was a rock star throwing herself into the crowd.

The mood immediately changed and suddenly everyone went crazy for Pumpkin. She had been abandoned all her life and she had never received so much love and affection from so many people at once. It was as if she instinctively knew “I have to get the message across, the kennel strays are the coolest dogs in the world.” The petting and hugging festival was amazing and instead of a stiff presentation, we now had a really relaxed and exciting dialogue with the students.

Now we’ve learned to let Pumpkin work her magic. She diplomatically walked around the class and let each second grader have equal time to pet her.

These little ones were filled with questions and they did not stop raising their hands with comments and at the end they asked for our autographs.

When Eldad, Pumpkin, and I wrapped up the day and walked off campus, most of the students were outside at tables eating lunch. The moment they saw us, they started yelling, “Pumpkin!”

I had an army of kids chasing me trying to get to superstar Pumpkin. Her teacher informed me that most of these children were first generation born in the United States and were not culturally exposed to animals as “part of the family.”

It is amazing to think that this dog that had had such an impact in a few hours on so many people, just two days before, sitting in a cage, was deemed not worth living.

There are many Pumpkins who face the same fate, and hopefully one day these youngsters will remember that they chose to save an animal over supporting puppy mills and pet stores. Perhaps other Pumpkins will have loving homes instead of being torn apart for pounds. I can only wait.

You can add an entry to the AutoCorrect dictionary. This is a fantastic feature to use to improve your productivity. It can greatly speed up data entry and also help reduce spelling errors.

After you add an entry or change AutoCorrect options in Word, they are updated in all Microsoft Office applications, improving your productivity when you use Excel or Outlook as well.

Let’s say I want to add Microsoft Office training to the dictionary so that whenever you enter mso in a Word document or Excel spreadsheet, automatically replaces the text with Microsoft Office training.

1. Open AutoCorrect Options as mentioned above, depending on the version of Microsoft Word you are using.

2. Enter mso in the Replace box:

Now every time you walk in mso in an Office application, the text is automatically replaced with Microsoft Office training.

Prevent automatic text replacement

When Word replaces text, a blue line appears below the first letter of the first word entered. If you point your mouse at this blue line, a smart tag with auto-correct options will appear.

This tag allows you to prevent Word from automatically changing mso. This is useful when you need to enter the text mso. They can be someone’s initials, an acronym, or the name of a project or company.

Click the AutoCorrect Options smart tag and select Switch back to “mso” or Stop autocorrecting “mso”.

This is useful but not particularly efficient. A good trick of the trade when using AutoCorrect is to prepend a symbol to the word to be replaced. For example, instead of mso we could have used /mso Prayed ?mso.

By using a set prefix for all your custom AutoCorrect entries, you will avoid the possibility of using the word mso in the future and AutoCorrect incorrectly replaces the word with Microsoft Office training.

Delete an AutoCorrect entry

To remove an entry:

The 25th reason you can’t find love is because you don’t understand the opposite sex. We are told so many lies about the opposite sex when we are children. We are told that girls are innocent and made of sugar, spices and all things good. Boys are made of puppy tails and dirt. Then they grow up and get to know each other without knowing how to interact. Both men and women end up using a one size fits all approach.

On the one hand, I have lived in several countries with English speakers and non-English speakers. What I saw were human beings. Healthy women had wombs and could have a baby. Men had sexual organs to impregnate women. While living in those places, I noticed that the men were stronger than the women, they all ate, slept, went to the bathroom and drank fluids. At some point, everyone got angry, sad, happy, frustrated, etc. And all healthy humans go through the experience of learning to walk, talk, eat, receive education and use it in our daily lives.

I say all this to say that there are many generalizations that all healthy humans share. Both men and women are human and share many common experiences.

However, in the US, many women view men as watchdogs and ATM machines. They have a more diplomatic way of saying it. They say a man’s role is to provide and protect. You don’t have to be human to do that. That’s where women miss out on the true value that men can bring.

Women are taught that men are simple, want one thing and think with smaller heads. They are told that women are smarter and more mature than men. However, all the civilizations and industries of the world have been created by men. How smart do you have to be to start from scratch and go from planning, financing, educating and employing people to building cities, towns, commerce and entertainment? Everything is done to make women’s lives safer and easier. Except the women pretend like the men haven’t done anything. All this points to the fact that women do not understand men.

At the same time, the men face a rude awakening when they learn that the women are not innocent. They have equally desirable thoughts about sex as men. Society tells him to hide it. They also find that women cheat. It’s not just the men. In fact, the difference between cheating wives is not much smaller than that between cheating husbands. As a result, many men go from believing all women are innocent to women being gold diggers in a nanosecond. This disillusionment makes communication between the sexes very difficult. It doesn’t help when women are told that there is a battle of the sexes and that they must compete against men.

Women are not taught how to communicate with men. Men are expected to “just know” what a woman wants. That makes a lot of men take a look and say “yes, dear.”

Perhaps one of the biggest differences in the way men and women are raised is that children are taught clear consequences for any behavior. The girls are not. When they grow up, it becomes apparent. You see that when you ask men what they are responsible for in relationships. As a general rule, men can respond with a long list. When women are asked the same question, they talk about home and children. None of that is directly for the man. At most, the woman will talk about food and sex is what she provides to the man. Those things are mutual. Outside of that, she is not aware of what a man needs. The problem is that there are no consequences for her. At best, her man cheats. She stays because she can hold that over her head.

Ultimately, people are not taught to treat themselves as human beings. Each of us is individually responsible for making the relationship work. In the 21st century, making a relationship work means that the man is responsible. If you doubt me, listen to the slogan, happy wife happy life. It is the man’s responsibility to make his wife happy. That is if he himself wants to be happy.

As you can see, this is only the result of education. We improperly educate boys and girls about the opposite sex. If we prepare them properly, it will be easier for men and women to come together.

I have always admired cats of any breed for their independence, cleanliness, and determination to go their own way.

I have 3 older cats and decided to adopt a kitten to foster because I missed the fun kittens brought to my life. After watching a TV show about different cat breeds, I fell in love with the Maine Coon breed and decided it was the kitty I wanted. I found a breeder near where I live. I was so excited to visit the kittens and find a new addition to my family of pets.

The kittens, just a few months old, were much larger than other breeds and had beautiful long coats and bushy tails. I got hooked!!

I brought my new four month old kitten home to introduce her to the rest of the family. My 2 large dogs and 3 older cats were very curious and of course the kitty hid under the bed where all kitties seem to hide when they are scared.

After many hours of trying to coax her out of hiding, she slowly appeared.

Misty, which was now her name, seemed quite unperturbed by all the attention she was receiving and soon became a very lively young woman, creating chaos throughout the house, many decorations thrown on the floor and pots investigated, especially those that had soil in them! for her to play!

I got a call from the breeder asking if he could take another kitten as he was closing his business, so of course I couldn’t say no. I went to pick up this kitten who needed a home, to find when I got there that there were two kittens, who were quite ill and I could see that they needed medical attention. I debated with myself why he would take on this extra responsibility, but being very kind, he couldn’t turn his back on them.

So for the next two weeks I kept them away from the other cats and took care of them day and night. With the help of my local vet, they made it through and I was able to rest easy that all my care and attention had given them a chance at a happy life.

They are now well adjusted to their new life and are causing complete chaos in the house by being destructive and playful like all kittens, but the Maine Coon is a determined breed, with the ability to be content to be alone or to run. the house, all three at once, to fix the carpets and furniture! They can grow up to four feet long so I hope they have settled in by then or my home may be in turmoil!

Contour embroidery played an important role in the history of quilting. It was used in blocks, most commonly penny squares, which were printed pieces of muslin that sold for a hundred each. Contour embroidery designs spanned many styles and themes, and many of these ancient patterns are still available to quilters today. In recent years, vintage doilies have been a main source of contour embroidery for patchwork projects.

While contour embroidery itself is centuries old, it made a big splash as quilt decoration in the 1870s and 1880s when it was used to decorate Crazy Quilts. Done in one color with a stem or outline stitch, it was quicker and easier than another Victorian technique called Kensington embroidery, which was realistically filled in and shaded.

Although patterns of flowers, birds and animals were popular in the 19th century, designs featuring children’s drawings by English artist Kate Greenaway predominated. Dressed in the costumes of the early 19th century, Greenaway’s figures began to appear in the 1860s and adorned all manner of objects, even after the publication of his last book in 1900. There were many similar children’s embroidery patterns, like those appearing in Butterick’s manual of 1889 Needlecraft, recently republished by RL Shep. By the 1890s, contour embroidery had spread from bedspreads and quilts to pillowcases. So ubiquitous were the Good Night/Good Morning sleeping boy motifs that a massive dealer, like Montgomery Ward, sold pairs of pre-sealed cases with these designs in his 1894-1895 catalogue. Ward also offered patterned suits with up to 75 patterns, including an entire alphabet. The kit had white powder for dark fabrics and blue powder for light ones. The pattern was pierced with a serrated tracing wheel, or the perforations could be made on a sewing machine with a threadless needle. Powder was then rubbed through the holes onto the cloth. Montgomery Ward also sold embroidery thread in many colors, although by 1900, peacock red was the most popular shade for contour embroidery on pillowcases and quilts.

Some women marked or printed their own cloth. They used commercially available patterns or outline drawings found in coloring books. A quilt from 1902, in the collection of the Museum of American Popular Art, has coal shuttles depicting the United Mine Workers strike of that year. Happy events also found their way into the red embroidered quilts; for example, the 1901 Pan-American Exposition and the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Redwork persisted beyond the 1900s. An early quilt, made from 16 large blocks, included some embroidered with the words “War Declared in 1914 ” and “Armistice signed in 1918”. The date “1922” was embroidered on a monogrammed crown.

Children, however, continued to be the most favored subjects for contour embroidery. Whether sewn in red or other colors, children’s patterns were usually drawn from illustrations in books and magazines. In the early 1900s, for example, Bertha Corbett’s Sunbonnet Babies and Bernhardt Wall’s Overall Boys took up where Kate Greenaway’s patterns left off and went on to adorn countless embroidered and appliquéd quilts.

Dutch children’s patterns, embroidered in blue or red thread, reached their peak of popularity just before World War I. Dolly Dingle and Billy Bumps, drawn by Grace Drayton, rose to fame as the Campbell Soup Kids and as embroidery subjects. Rose O’Neill’s Kewpies provided strong competition, particularly in the 1920s.

Other important themes from the interwar decades included country houses, flower baskets, and Western themes, especially cowboys. President Roosevelt’s Scottish pet Fala practically had a souvenir industry to himself. The puppy was used in many needlework projects. World War II produced embroidery motifs of cartoon-like sailors and soldiers and their girlfriends. In the postwar period, cute overweight French puppies, kittens, charcoal burners, and chefs appeared in embroidery, mostly on tablecloths, pillowcases, and ruffles, tea towels rather than duvets, though today’s quilters can make adorable creations based on these designs.

Occasionally very old pillowcases turn up at antique stores and shows, but they are often expensive. Separate redwork blocks, usually sold in a set, are more affordable. Kitchen rugs and dish towels from the 1920s-1950s will rarely cost more than $10 each and can cost as little as a dollar. Some quilt guilds may have collections of old designs that members can track down. Flea markets and garage sales are good sources for old, unused transfers, items that are patterned but never embroidered, and even dental floss in colors that are no longer available. Chinese painting patterns from old magazines and books were similar to embroidery designs from that decade, so they can be substituted.

For those who enjoy reliving the past with tradition-rich quilts, making reproductions of penny squares and other contour embroidery work can be very satisfying. And what girl wouldn’t want a quilt stitched with kittens, puppies, Kewpies or nursery rhyme figures for her bed?

We’re all stretching our paychecks (if we’re still getting one) as much as possible these days. We are also very concerned about all possible health hazards and living a greener life. Unfortunately, what often accompanies supposedly “greener” products is higher prices. A walk down any aisle of any store, and this is immediately apparent. I recently read numerous articles about the green speculation that is taking place in virtually every industry.

I also read misleading articles referring to soap nuts as an expensive eco-friendly alternative to laundry detergent. Nothing could be THAT far from the truth. I’ve gotten more than one apology (of some kind) from writers who just didn’t do their research very well. Any conclusion of a study that begins with faulty premises and inadequate testing techniques will result in incorrect data. A big problem with soap nuts is that there are huge data gaps and some poor quality information floating around. One writer stated that the cost of using soap nuts was around 50 cents per load. That was complete nonsense. I quickly straightened it. Used correctly, soap nuts can be one of the MOST affordable ways to do laundry! It is VERY easy to calculate. You just need the correct data to calculate.

NOTE: It is important to realize that it is prohibitively expensive to purchase samples of soap nuts or just a few ounces. The purpose of the “samples” is just to TEST THEM. Period. If you like the way they work, you’ll likely buy them in much larger quantities to lower your cost per ounce and associated cost per load. Right?

Let’s compare the cost of using soap nuts to using many commercial detergents we see all the time. Let’s break down the numbers: (You’ll certainly notice that I’m skipping the metrics and referring to the USD. I think the different methods of weights and measures, as well as the different currencies, have added to some confusion. I’m a US citizen and write in largely for easily understood by the US audience. I sincerely apologize to anyone who has not been accused of my use of pesos and common currency in the US).

You can buy about two pounds (32 ounces) of good soap nuts for about $30. That would be a very common amount for an expert soap nut user to purchase. Used in the traditional way, you will use approx. half an ounce in a wash bag and that will average about 5 loads. That yields approx. 320 loads for the $30 dollars spent. Personally, I can usually get a lot more charges than that, but that’s down to a few tricks I use to extend its shelf life and maximize saponin extraction. BUT, to be conservative, we’re going with only FOUR loads per half ounce.

One note worth mentioning: I’ve seen sellers claim load amounts that seem to be all over the place. I have also heard of people claiming to use half the amount I suggest using. I can’t explain that. Let’s just take into account the many, many variables in how people do laundry, plus the variables in the quality and types of soap nuts, and leave it at that. My approach is very “middle-of-the-road”. I’m dealing with norms, not extremes, so this is meaningful for the vast majority of scenarios.

You can take THIS to the bank: When using good quality soapnuts (the mukorossi variety is very good), half an ounce (usually five or six whole soapnuts or the equivalent in pieces) traditionally used (in a wash bag that is put directly with your clothes) will be reusable for four to six loads, easily.

So with only FOUR loads per half ounce, that would give us only 256 loads (not 320) of 32 ounces. $30 divided by 256 equals $0.127 per load. And we’re talking about average size, standard loads, not high-efficiency loads that will extend the number of uses and thus further reduce the cost per load.

Now let’s do some “cost per load” comparisons of soap nuts with “natural” detergents and other popular types of detergents in the typical sizes in which they are available. Please note that all prices are from reputable sellers and are typical prices that are easily found. Again, all soapnut prices per load are based on standard loads, not HE loads. I do my best to be very conservative and realistic in all my calculations and estimates.

The following are common prices for soap nuts in various common sizes (I pulled them directly off the internet from a reputable supplier): Note: I am even including common prices for smaller size bags (at higher costs per ounce, and STILL using only FOUR loads per half-ounce wash bag.) – One 64-ounce bag of Soapnuts: $57.95 for 512 loads ($0.113 per load) – One 32-ounce bag of Soapnuts: $29.95 for 256 loads ($0.117 per load) – One 16 – One 8-ounce bag of soap nuts: $19.95 for 128 loads ($0.155 per load) – One 8-ounce bag of soap nuts: $12.75 for 64 loads ($0.199 per load)

It quickly becomes apparent that soap nuts are VERY inexpensive compared to most detergents. (Note that I also picked a nice random crossover sample from very common brands to some more esoteric ones.) Used correctly, soap nuts can significantly reduce our laundry costs. PLUS, this doesn’t even take into account that you need virtually no fabric softener or dryer sheets when using soap nuts.

It’s also worth mentioning that all of these soapnut comparison products are around (more or less) the same 32-ounce weight range that I mentioned above that is popular with soapnut users. Most stores (apart from warehouse type stores) don’t seem to have much in sizes larger than that. I can only assume that most retailers have determined the right size, weight, and price for detergents in this weight range to be the most common sellers. It is the difference in the number of loads per ounce between soap nuts and commercial detergents that is absolutely staggering.

Regardless, the gist of this article comes down to the COST PER LOAD of using soap nuts compared to commercial detergents. Soap nuts are NOT expensive. They’re a much more affordable means of washing our clothes, and it certainly doesn’t get any more eco-friendly. As shown above, even a very small bag of soap nuts (8 ounces for $12.75) costs much less per load than any of these commercial brands, and again that’s VERY conservative on all counts. They are less than half the cost per load compared to one of Tide’s flagship detergents.

I gave a single mom, a good friend of mine with three kids, a bag of soap nuts for the holidays. She has been working hard to make ends meet. Since then, she has raved about how wonderfully they worked, how her clothes never smelled so clean and soft, how her washing machine no longer smelled like mold and mildew. She had difficulty describing the smell, because there is no smell. How do you simply describe the scent of pure and clean? Think about it.

She didn’t stop with the clothes. She hasn’t stopped experimenting, and last I heard the liquid she made from her cleaned her coffee maker better than even CLR. (Yuk. I’m sure she would have cleaned the CLR very well. She’s a smart woman.) Incredible. She tells me that her coffee maker works and she looks like new again.

Soapnuts aren’t just rising in consumer awareness when GREEN is “in.” It’s growing in awareness at a time when we can all use conserving a little more of the green in our pockets. The green movement is only going to continue to grow. Both business and government have recognized the need for change (for different reasons, of course). Our children WILL LIVE in a much greener, safer and more efficient world than we have known and grew up in. There is no better time than now to discover all the wonders that soap nuts have to offer. Better laundry products are just the beginning.

Let’s say you’d like to impress your clients or organization with a fancy logo or header, but you don’t have the funds to pay a qualified graphic designer to do it for you.

Here’s a second best solution that can save you hundreds of dollars. All you need is your Microsoft Word.

In MS Word, type your title, say, “Acme”.

Increase the font size to at least 36 or 72.

Select your title. Select Format > Font on your main menu to display the Font dialog.

Select the following settings:

Font: I like Trebuchet and Bauhaus, but I experiment with different fonts.

Color: White (Assuming you are using white paper. This effect works best if the font color is the same as the paper.)

Effect – Engraving.

Click OK and you’ll get a modern looking logo or header.

Spacing (on the Character Spacing tab): Expanded by at least 10%

Experiment with the other settings on the other tabs of the Font dialog and see what happens.

If you’re designing stationery, avoid the number one mistake most non-designers make: avoid centering everything.

I don’t know who invented the notion that centered text is the easiest to read, but it’s not. The natural rhythm of the human eye is to scan a page from top left to bottom right. So wrapping all the text to the left would be perfectly fine.

There are quite a few professional graphics creation and page layout programs out there, such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. But why spend extra money when you have great free graphics tools already built right into your MS Word?

The arguments to reveal this can be easily obtained within Ulises and once discovered one can easily accept the proposal.

In Bloom’s first appearance in Ulises (Episode 4) He does something very un-Jewish, he buys a pig’s kidney. He is dressed in black because, later in the morning, he will attend Paddy Dignam’s Catholic funeral.

In episode 8, we see that Bloom supports the charity dinner for St. Kevin’s Reformatory in Glencree run by Christian Brothers.

In episode 11, Bloom thinks of an imaginary date, “A respectable girl meets after mass”, again indicating that Bloom regularly attends Catholic mass.

And in episode 12, Bloom unhesitatingly delivers the very Christian message that love is the answer to humanity’s problems and does so, in a pub no less.

In episode 14, we read that Bloom attended high school as a young student. The High School was, and still is, a leading educational institution under the patronage of the Protestant Church of Ireland.

In episode 15, Bloom buys what is again a very un-Jewish meal, ‘a crubeen of pork and a trotter of sheep’. His mother, Ellen, particularly in her language, is revealed to us as an Irish Catholic mother.

In episode 16, when Bloom and Stephen make their way to Bloom’s house, they discuss music and we are told that Bloom “infinitely preferred the sacred music of the Catholic church”.

In Episode 17 we find out that Bloom was baptized three times into the Christian faith. And very revealingly, we also discover that Bloom’s father converted to Christianity, of the Protestant persuasion, before they married. I mean, Bloom’s father was a practicing Christian even before Bloom was born.

And for good measure we also discover that Bloom himself converted to Catholicism before marrying his wife Molly.

We also read in episode 17 that he bought a grave in Glasnevin Catholic Cemetery. And more, on his shelf he has the book, The hidden life of Christ.
