A vacation that included an “island time” was long overdue, as it had been more than 25 since my last visit to Bermuda, and my husband had never been to this beautiful little island. Bermuda is one of the most cosmopolitan of all the islands of the Atlantic Caribbean. This small island has a form of British influence, an international banking presence, and a well-established community. Bermuda can be reached by plane in just 3 hours, from New York City, and is easily accessible from much of the East Coast of the United States. With the charm of easy access, a comfortable western outlook, and a reliable tourism industry, the island is a fantastic vacation spot. Given Bermuda’s unique tourist customer base and lack of arable land, the island is expensive.

The restaurant’s food is undoubtedly geared towards a tourist crowd and is priced accordingly. Of course, there are some local spots that include an almost hidden Harry gem that we found one night. Harry’s Restaurant is located in an office complex next to the Hamilton Marina. This restaurant has a nice patio on a quiet cul-de-sac at the end of the marina. It also has an extensive bar menu (food and drink), I would recommend the salt and pepper shrimp and the tuna carpaccio. There is no possibility of leaving this place hungry or thirsty. We also understand that on Friday afternoons this place is buzzing during happy hour.

Aside from the food at Harry’s, we had mixed dining experiences in Bermuda. Coconuts in The Reefs Hotel had received several reviews from a disparate group of people, so it sounded like a must-try place. The restaurant’s location is on the water’s edge, where you can dine on the patio overlooking the waves or at a table on the sandy beach. However, the indicator should have been the $ 75 prix fixe dinner. The food was disappointing and unmistakably created for a crowd of tourists. We recommend going for a cocktail and seeing the view and scenery, but skip your dinner package. They have another fantastic patio overlooking the ocean and the beach, at road level. This would also be a lovely place to have a drink.

Our last night we tried The Waterlog Inn associated with the Southampton Princess. It is a classic steakhouse. Food and service were extremely good. The restaurant was full, possibly with those people also disappointed by Coconuts. My husband would recommend this restaurant based on the wine selection. However, I stay on the fence as the restaurant can be found in any large city in North America. We did not try, although we should have, the dining room at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. The lighthouse is on a hill and the open-air restaurant has the best views on the island. Give it a try and let us know.

The coffee in Bermuda was disappointing. Hamilton has a few places that serve espresso, including the Hamilton Princess coffee shop. The first place we tried was the coffee shop located inside Miles Market. The lattes were prepared by two baristas who were far more interested in talking on the phone than serving their customers. The next day we ventured a little further to Common Ground, which is in an alley, just off Front Street. The Common Ground lattes were an improvement over the day before, albeit a bit milky. We gave their food a decent rating. My husband had his breakfast sandwich a BLT with egg. It was made to order and beautifully presented. The restaurant that gets the highest local ratings is Rock Island on Reid Street. Sunday morning, I ventured out to see if Rock Island was really the place for coffee. However, it was a failed mission, absolutely nothing is open in Hamilton on Sunday mornings. Even the Juice and Java store on Front Street only opens at 2pm. My failed coffee mission led me back to the aforementioned Hamilton Princess coffee shop, which had a line at the door of hotel guests and islanders who had just finished their road bike rides. Literally this is the only coffee shop open in Hamilton on a Sunday and the coffee was terrible.

Despite disappointing dining experiences, Bermuda offers a wide variety of tourist attractions and activities. The island is small and easy to explore. The ferry and bus system works together, with little effort you can reach either end of the island in about 60 minutes, from Hamilton. There are up to 4 bus options each way and several ferry options during the week. Be sure to check the museum and fort opening hours before heading out to explore, as we found that Fort St Catherine is only open on weekdays. We recommend spending at least half a day at the Royal Naval Dockyard and exploring the Bermuda Maritime Museum and the Commissioner’s House. However, keep in mind that the Royal Naval Dockyard is also the port for cruise ships visiting the island, so expect a significant number of tourist shops and associated inflated prices.

St George’s is on the other (east) end of the island. This small town is a step back in time to the 19th century, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This small port still has cobbled streets and alleys. There are some attractive shops and restaurants. Be sure to visit Tobacco Bay and swim or have a drink overlooking the ocean. St George’s can be reached by boat from Monday to Friday or by any of the 4 buses every day of the week.

The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse stands at the highest point on the island, built in 1844 and is the oldest cast iron lighthouse in the world. The hill is 245 feet high and the lighthouse itself is 117 feet. A 1,000-watt light bulb sits inside a lens that spins in a 1,200-pound mercury channel. Ships can see the beam of light from 40 miles away and from a range of 120 miles by a plane flying at 10,000 feet. The views are worth the climb to the top of the hill.

Golfers love Bermuda. There are numerous courses with varied terrain and prices. We were lucky enough to play at the Mid-Ocean Club and Port Royal courses. Mid-Ocean is a classic old course, with a lot of trouble along the way and certainly a challenging hike. At the time of our visit, the Port Royal course was undergoing a massive makeover for the Grand Slam. The Port Royal course has a lot of sand and is not easy for the average golfer. We visited, although we did not play Tuckers Point, which is adjacent to Mid-Ocean. Tuckers Point offers fabulous terrain, tennis, a semi-private beach, and a beautiful golf course with terrain remarkably similar to the Mid-Ocean.

Bermuda’s beaches are all beautiful, possibly even the best feature on the island. The sand is pinkish white. We found that it is not too difficult to get away from the crowds and find a secluded spot to swim. Bermuda is beautiful and worth a visit.

Architects, designers, builders, the mayor of Los Angeles, and their fans have long known this fact: Downtown Los Angeles has finally caught on. Shoppers come to the same conclusion: Downtown Los Angeles is the most underrated major city on planet Earth.

Well, actually downtown Los Angeles has done great since 1995, during which time the City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency committed to leveling homes and clearing the ground for future commercial skyscraper development. This period saw the cleanup and zoning of the entire neighborhood, more Broadway department stores closed, and many of the remaining downtown Los Angeles financial corporations moving into vacant Class A office space on Bunkers Hill.

In mid-2013, the center stood out as “a neighborhood with an increasingly fashionable and affluent residential population.” It began to attract foreign millionaires as well, mainly from China, who rushed to invest in it, sometimes with a down payment. Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, as well as a diverse residential neighborhood of about 50,000 people at the time of writing. A 2013 study found that the district is home to more than 500,000 jobs. Wikipedia mentions that the district deteriorated economically and suffered a recession for decades until the early 2000s. Now, construction is fast. Old buildings are being modified for new uses and skyscrapers have been built. Downtown Los Angeles is known for its government buildings, parks, theaters, and other public places.

In 2013, a study by the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID) showed that of the 52,400 people residing in downtown Los Angeles, the demographic breakdown was 52.7% Caucasian, 20.1% Asian, 17.0% Latino and 6.2% African American; 52.9% women, 47.1% men; and 74.8% of the residents were between 23 and 44. The median age of the residents was 3. The median household income was $ 98,700. The median household size was 1.8. In terms of educational attainment, 80.1% of the residents had completed at least 4 years of university. The study was a self-selected sample of 8,841 respondents in the downtown Los Angeles area. It was not a “census” but rather a comprehensive survey of downtown Los Angeles consumers.

More recently, downtown Los Angeles has attracted a commercial yuppie New York sector that is too keen on redefining ground for their projects.

The latest news is that a British company plans to remodel a historic building in downtown Los Angeles.

Hoxton and Los Angeles

Hoxton is a British Hotel Operator Who: Breaking News! – Just today (Dec. 29) he bought a historic building in downtown Los Angeles for $ 30 million and plans to transform the decaying structure into a sleek, modern hotel, according to JLL, the brokerage involved in the deal.

Hoxton owns hotels in London and Amsterdam and plans to open another in New York and one in Paris next year. The fact that he chose Los Angeles, the center of the city, says something significant about the growing appeal of the area.

Hoxton describes his brand as the “anti-hotel,” where travelers find not just a bed, but “a place where people can eat, drink, work and play at any time of the day.” Its character is indicated by the description given to it by the British newspaper The Independent, which called Hoxton’s outpost in Amsterdam “an almost painfully fashionable hotel in the most modern city in the Netherlands.”

According to a JLL map that tracks millennials and baby boomers, downtown Los Angeles outnumbers baby boomers by 10% in a consumer market. In most industry markets in Los Angeles, the breakdown is from 25% of millennials to 21% of baby boomers. Sara Lo, a senior manager specializing in the hospitality business at the accounting and consulting firm Ernst & Young, says Sara Lo, “Downtown is thriving and international companies are taking notice.”

Finally.

The area’s hotel market has long been dominated by corporate giants catering to business travelers. Tourists flocked to West Hollywood or beach communities like Santa Monica and Marina del Rey. The city area was once derided as a ghost town after five o’clock, but is now home to a lively restaurant and bar scene. Developers draw pages of small boutique “lifestyle” hotels, with uniquely designed rooms and high-end dining and nightlife offerings. And a recent Los Angeles Times commented that the investment is the latest sign that the neighborhood’s rebirth has created a place where tourists, not just business travelers looking for a comfortable environment, want to unwind. Proof: now the money comes from abroad. Investors around the world also value the place.

Across the street will be the 148-room Downtown LA Proper Hotel which will be housed in an empty building dating from the 1920s. Two blocks away is the popular Ace Hotel, a boutique that opened last year in the Historic United Artists Building and is credited with bringing more investment to the area.

Even the big chains are getting in.

A Hotel Indigo, a fashion brand operated by InterContinental Hotels Group, is under construction as part of the Metropolis development of a billion-dollar Chinese company near the Staples Center.

The downtown market is strong, with a 77% occupancy rate that exceeds the 75% average for the country’s top 25 markets, Lo said. Some predict an imminent threat of overbuilding, but the designers don’t want to think about it. Ernest Wooden Jr., president of the Los Angeles Convention and Tourism Board, builds momentum. It says: “The projects currently underway are critical to our long-term ability to attract both business and leisure travelers,” it said in a statement.

Areas around 11th and Broadway that saw little investment in the past are now increasing and several residential complexes are under construction, including approximately 650 apartment units from luxury developer Geoffrey Palmer. New York developer Georgetown Co. announced a $ 40 million project in September to remodel the historic Herald Examiner building into creative offices and ground-level restaurants. Several buildings on Broadway are decrepit and have been empty for decades. Others are chipped, covered in graffiti, bent under crumbling roofs and bruised with peeling paint. There are so many fun and interesting things to do in this beautiful little town of Dillon Beach, located in beautiful Marin County on the California coast. Plan a wonderful visit for a family reunion, a girls’ weekend, or a corporate retreat. Trekking

At the top of the Oceana Drive bluff at the end of the street, go through a cattle gate. On the left, there is a beautiful view from Eagle Rock, overlooking Bodega Head and the beautiful Tomales Bay. You’d think it was in Scotland, but it’s just over an hour’s drive from San Francisco! There are some deer trails you will see, follow them to the right and you will find a fire trail. Go left and you will reach the Estero in about a mile. Lots of good sticks and rocks along the way! Fun for kids of all ages. Dogs love this hike!

Another great hiking area is the Pt. Reyes National Seashore Visitor Center. It is a beautiful 45 minute drive from Dillon Beach. There are fun trails – be sure to go for the earthquake one and then go to Miwok village as well. You can drive along Tomales Bay on an adventure to climb the 300 steps to the lighthouse. Look along the path to see the free-running Tule Elk and hear the barking of the sea lions along the shore.

Towns

If you’re heading to the National Seashore Center, plan some time in Pt. Reyes, it’s a cute little town with some fun shops. Be sure to visit Toby’s grocery store. There is a children’s park behind Toby’s. Bovine Bakery is well known, and good! The locals have their own coffee mugs on the shelves, so bring your own to feel a part of things. Next door is a great bookstore to explore.

However, Tomales has the best bakery in the world. Open Thursday through Sunday only, you need to get there early, before they sell out! The William Tell has just been redone and is quite good. now you can sit outside to enjoy a delicious barbecue oyster. The deli is great for sandwiches, which you can take across the street to the park and let the kids play. Don’t miss the hot lamb sandwich! In the opposite direction is the native plant nursery, which is fun to explore.

Petaluma has a great historic center. Nice shops, antiques, and great restaurants. It didn’t suffer as much damage from the 1906 earthquake as so many areas of North Bay and San Francisco were, so the buildings are among some of the oldest in our area. Known for its past chicken industry, it still hosts “Chicken and Egg Days,” with a fun parade and family activities honoring the popular town of yesteryear.

Other Fun Cities to Explore: The small town of Bodega (not Bodega Bay) is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed “The Birds.” Sevastopol has a great city center, plus plenty of antique shops along the Gravenstein highway. Healdsburg is a great place to visit, the town square is beautiful with shops and restaurants to explore.

San Francisco is a fun day trip. You can explore Golden Gate Park, with the museums or the Exploratorium at the Palace of Fine Arts. Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Ghirardelli Square are fun to explore.

Wine tasting

So many to choose from! While Napa is the most famous, and is only 45 minutes away, the locals really prefer the area closer to Dillon Beach. Sonoma County’s rivals Napa are world-class wines. Go to Alexander Valley, Russian River Wine Road or try some of the smaller boutique wineries in Sevastopol.

Dillon Beach

If you want to stay close to home, try our beach! You can make a fire in a bonfire and your dog can also enjoy the beach. The north end of the beach often has large tide pools to explore. The dunes are a lot of fun to run and climb, but make sure you don’t allow kids to dig too deep, the sand moves and a hole can easily collapse.

You can walk south along the beach to Lawson’s Landing, the campground. There is a pier where you can fish or crab. Clams are popular here too. There is a fee to drive to the landing.

Choosing the right island can definitely make a difference in your vacation experience. Many travelers assume that the Caribbean islands are all the same, with great beaches, lots of sun, and warm turquoise waters. . . and most of the islands offer much of the above. I say more because the islands of Dominica and Saba are not on any beach lover’s list.
