Messianic Prophecy
One of the most powerful and convincing ways to prove that the Bible is true and divinely inspired is through Bible prophecy. There are different types of Bible prophecies that can be used: Messianic (Jesus Christ), the people and land of Israel, the surrounding nations, the future of the world, and the “End Times.” I will discuss messianic prophecies. These prophecies deal with predictions about Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Messiah in Hebrew means “The Anointed One”.
Written over a span of 1,000 years, the Old Testament contains 300 prophetic references to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. The probability that a man will fulfill only eight of the 300 messianic prophecies is astronomical. That would be one in a hundred trillion. Jesus Christ fulfills the three hundred prophecies! This would have been impossible if He were not the Son of God. Below I have listed prophecies and fulfilled prophecies about his birth, his nature, his ministry, his death and burial, and his resurrection.
Your birth
How many times have we heard the story of the birth of Jesus, but people may not understand that His birth was predicted 400 to 1000 years before His birth? These prophecies written between 1450 a. C. and 430 a. C. are very detailed in their description of the time, place and circumstances of his birth and are all 100% accurate. Predicting anything 10 years from now would be difficult, but predicting anything 4 to 15 centuries from now with perfect accuracy would have to be a God-inspired plan.
Share Micah 5:2 with an unbeliever and then show them the fulfillment of this prophecy in Matthew 2:1. When you talk about Bethlehem, that should surely ring a bell.
Prophecy – “But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, little to be among the families of Judah, from you will come the one who will be Lord in Israel, whose departures are from the beginning, from eternity” (Micah 5:2).
Fulfillment of prophecy – “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem” (Matthew 2:1).
his, her nature
The Bible makes it very clear about the unique nature of Jesus Christ. He was born of a virgin. His name would be Emmanuel, which means “God with us”. The spirit of the Lord would rest upon Him in wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. He was both Lord and Christ. There are a number of scriptures that verify this. I have listed a couple of scriptures that you can use to sway the skeptic.
Prophecy – “The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, Until I make your enemies your footstool” (Psalm 110:1).
Fulfillment of prophecy – “Let all the house of Israel know, therefore, that God has made this very Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36).
Prophecy – “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and she shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).
Fulfillment of the prophecy – “All this happened so that what the Lord said through the prophet might be fulfilled, when he said: Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call his name Immanuel, which translated is: God with us” (Matthew 1:22-23).
your ministry
As stated in the Gospels, preparation for the ministry of Jesus Christ began with his baptism in the Jordan River in Judea by John the Baptist. He was thirty years old at the beginning of his ministry. Immediately after his baptism in water, he was led by the Holy Spirit to the Judean desert to fast forty days and forty nights. He then returned to Galilee to preach and recruit the first disciples of his who traveled with him. They formed the final nucleus of the early Church.
After the death of John the Baptist, Jesus went to Jerusalem where he ministered. His last week in Jerusalem has been called Passion Week, culminating in his crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. I have listed below two scriptures that he can use to point to the prediction and fulfillment of his earthly ministry.
Prophecy – “However, the darkness will not be as it was in its affliction, when it first afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali lightly, and then afflicted it more severely by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on them who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, light has dawned on them” (Isaiah 9:1-2).
Fulfillment of the prophecy: “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, immediately came up out of the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him: And behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:13,16-17).
Prophecy – “Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lamb-man will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb will sing; for in the desert waters will flow, and streams in the desert ” (Isaiah 35:5-6).
Fulfillment of prophecy – “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every disease among the people. Jesus answered and said to them, Go and show John again what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, and lambs walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the gospel is preached to the poor: (Matthew 9:35; 11:4 -5).
His death and burial
The fulfilled prophecies of the death and burial of Jesus Christ give further evidence of his glorious place in history. Below are scriptures he can use to bring truth, hope, and light to those in darkness.
Prophecy – “I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who tore out my hair; I did not hide my face from shame and spitting” (Isaiah 50:6).
Fulfillment of the prophecy – “Then Pilate, wanting to please the people, released Barabbas for them, and handed over Jesus, after flogging him, to be crucified” (Mark 15:15).
Prophecy – “For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of the wicked has surrounded me; they pierced my hands and my feet” (Psalm 22:16).
Fulfillment of the prophecy – “Then the other disciples said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: If I do not see the nail prints in your hands, and put my finger in the nail prints, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. Then he (Jesus) said to Thomas, “Reach out your finger here, and see my hands; and reach out your hand, and put it into my side; and be not unbelieving, but believing” (John 20:25, 27).
Prophecy – “And his grave was made with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; for he did no violence, neither was deceit in his mouth” (Isaiah 53:9).
Fulfillment of the prophecy – “When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus, came: he went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered the body to go and Joseph taking the body He wrapped him in a clean sheet and put him in his new tomb, which he had dug out of the rock, and he rolled a great stone at the door of the tomb and left (Matthew 27:57-60).
his resurrection
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ distinguishes Christianity from all other religions. There is no evidence that any of the founders of other religions were ever resurrected. The empty tomb testifies to the Resurrection. He uses these prophecies to convince the doubters.
Prophecy – “For you will not leave my soul in hell, nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption” (Psalm 16:10).
Fulfillment of prophecy – “Whom God raised up, delivered from the pains of death, because he could not possibly be held back from it” (Acts 2:24).
Prophecy – “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to me, You are my son; today I have begotten you” (Psalm 2:7).
Fulfillment of prophecy – “And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and ruler of the kings of the earth, who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5) .
