I collect these. Additions to this list are welcome. Also, note that in some cases I don’t know the origin of a particular expression. If you have knowledge or theories about the origin of something below, I would also like to hear from you. I hope you enjoy it.

Speaking through your hat

Talk nonsense or lie. c1885. [In an interview in The World entitled “How About White Shirts”, a reporter asked a New York streetcar conductor what he thought about efforts to get the conductors to wear white shirts like their counterparts in Chicago. “Dey’re talkin’ tru deir hats” he was quoted as replying.]

Eating your hat

There is no one sure thing, but that’s where this expression comes from. If you tell someone that you will eat their hat if they do something, make sure you are not wearing your best hat, just in case. [The expression goes back at least to the reign of Charles II of Great Britain and had something to do with the amorous proclivities of ‘ol Charlie. Apparently they named a goat after him that had his same love of life which included, in the goat’s case, eating hats.]

Old hat

Old and boring things; out of style. [This seems to come from the fact that hat fashions are constantly changing. The fact of the matter is that hat fashions had not been changing very fast at all until the turn of the 19th Century. The expression therefore is likely about 100 years old.]

Mad as a hatter

Totally insane, crazy. [Hatters did, indeed, go mad. They inhaled fumes from the mercury that was part of the process of making felt hats. Not recognizing the violent twitching and derangement as symptoms of a brain disorder, people made fun of affected hat-makers, often treating them as drunkards. In the U.S., the condition was called the “Danbury shakes.” (Danbury, Connecticut, was a hat-making center.) Mercury is no longer used in the felting process: hat-making — and hat-makers — are safe.]

Hat in hand

A demonstration of humility. For example, “I come hat in hand” means that I come out of deference or weakness. [I assume that the origins are from feudal times when serfs or any lower members of feudal society were required to take off their hats in the presence of the lord or monarch (remember the Dr. Seuss book “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins”?). A hat is your most prideful adornment.]

The hat pass

Literally passing a man’s hat among members of an audience or group as a means of collecting money. Also to beg or ask for charity. [The origin is self-evident as a man’s hat turned upside down makes a fine container.]

Fitted like Dick’s hat band

Anything that is too tight. [The Dick in this case is Richard Cromwell, the son of England’s 17th Century “dictator”, Oliver Cromwell. Richard succeeded his dad and wanted to be king but was quickly disposed. The hatband in the phrase refers to the crown he never got to wear.]

Hat trick

Three consecutive successes in a game or other endeavor. For example, taking three wickets with three successive pitches by a bowler in a cricket game, three goals or points won by a player in a soccer or ice hockey game, etc. [From cricket, from the former practice of awarding a hat to a bowler who dismissed three batsmen with three successive balls.]

Hard hats

In the 19th century, men who wore derby hats, specifically oriental businessmen and later criminals, gamblers, and detectives. [Derby hats, a.k.a. Bowlers or Cokes, were initially very hard as they were developed in 1850 for use by a game warden, horseback rider wanting protection.] Today, the “helmets” are construction workers. [for obvious reasons].

In one’s hat, or in the hat

An expression of disbelief. [Origin unknown. Help us if you can]

Throw a hat in the ring

Participate in a contest or race, for example, a political candidacy. [A customer wrote us with the following: “I read in “The Language of American Politics” by William F. Buckley Jr. that the phrase “throw one’s hat in the ring” comes from a practice of 19th Century saloonkeepers putting a boxing ring in the middle of the barroom so that customers who wanted to fight each other would have a place to do so without starting a donnybrook. If a man wanted to indicate that he would fight anybody, he would throw his hat in the ring.

At one point, Theodore Roosevelt declared he was running for office with a speech that included a line that went something like, “My hat is in the ring and I am stripped to the waist”. The phrase “my hat in the ring” stuck, probably because “I am stripped to the waist” is a little gross.]

Congratulations. . .

“Hats off to the United States Winter Olympic team,” for example. An exclamation of approval or congratulations. [Origins must be from the fact that taking one’s hat off or tipping one’s hat is a traditional demonstration of respect.]

A feather in your cap

A special achievement. [I assume that the origins on this expression hail from the days when, in fact, a feather for one’s cap would be awarded for an accomplishment much like a medal is awarded today and pinned to one’s uniform. A feather, or a pin, add a certain prestige or luster to one’s apparel.]

Hold on to your hat (s)

A warning that some excitement or danger is imminent. [When riding horseback or in an open-air early automobile, the exclamation “hold on to your hat” when the horse broke into a gallop or the car took-off was certainly literal.]

Bee in your hat

A hint of agitation or an idea that you cannot let go and that you just have to express. [A real bee in one’s bonnet certainly precipitates expression.]

Wearing many hats

This, of course, is a metaphor for having many different duties or jobs. [Historically, hats have often been an integral, even necessary, part of a working uniform. A miner, welder, construction worker, undertaker, white-collar worker or banker before the 1960s, chef, farmer, etc. all wear, or wore, a particular hat. Wearing “many hats” or “many different hats” simply means that one has different duties or jobs.]

All hat and no cattle

All spectacle and without substance. For example, in October 2003, Senator Robert Byrd declared that the Bush administration’s declarations that it wanted the United Nations as a partner in transforming Iraq were “All with hats and no cattle.” [This Texas expression refers to men who dress the part of powerful cattlemen, but don’t have the herds back home.]

To hang your hat (or not)

Commit to something (or not), or stake your reputation on something (or not), like an idea or policy. For example, “I would not hang my hat on George Steinbrenner’s decision to fire his manager.” [Origin unknown. Can anyone help with this one?]

At the drop of a hat

Fast. [Dropping a hat, can be a way in which a race can start (instead of a starting gun for example). Also, a hat is an apparel item that can easily become dislodged from its wearer. Anyone who wears hats regularly has experienced the quickness by which a hat can fly off your head.]

Tilt the hat or the tip of the hat

An endorsement of respect, approval, appreciation or similar. Example: “A salute to the American troops for the capture of Saddam Hussein.” [This is simply verbalizing an example of hat etiquette. Men would (and some still do) tip their hat to convey the same message.]

My hat instead of me

This is an expression of Ecuador, home of the “Panama” hat. It means what it says; it is preferable to give up your hat than your life. [The Guayas River runs through Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city on the Pacific coast. People from the city were known to hunt alligators for their hides in the river by swimming stark naked wearing Panama hats on their heads and long knives between their teeth. When the reptiles open their jaws and go for the swimmer, he dives leaving his hat floating on the surface for the alligator to chew on while he plunges the knife into the animal’s vitals. Bad hat

I think this is a French expression for a bad person. [Ludwig Bemelmans’ MADELINE series of children’s books, set in France, includes one MADELINE AND THE BAD HAT. In this story Madeline, our heroine, refers to a little boy neighbor as a “bad hat”. She clearly means this as a metaphor for a bad person and because I do not know the expression in English, I assume this is a common French reference. If anyone out there knows more about this, please drop us an email.]

Keep something under the hat

Keeping a secret. [People kept important papers and small treasures under their hats. One’s hat was often the first thing put on in the morning and the last thing taken off at night, so literally keeping things under one’s hat was safe keeping. A famous practitioner of this was Abraham Lincoln. The very utilitarian cowboy hat was also commonly used for storage.]

Here’s your hat, but what’s your rush

When someone has taken enough of their time and wants them to leave. [Origin unknown.]

He wears his office in his hat

Operating a business with very little money. [Important papers and the like were often carried in one’s hat.]

His cap lays

A young woman “puts the cap on” a young man who hopes to have an interest in marrying her. [Long ago, maidens wore caps indoors because homes were poorly heated. A girl set her most becoming hat on her head when an eligible fellow came to call.]

Thinking cap

Putting on your “thinking cap” is giving some serious thought to some problem. [Teachers and philosophers in the Middle Ages often wore distinctive caps that set them apart from those who had less learning. Caps became regarded as a symbol of education. People put them on (literally or figuratively) to solve their own problems.]

Black hat. . .

Black hat tactics, black hat intentions, etc. they refer to nefarious actions or designs. [Black hats in Western lore and literature were the bad guys.]

White hat. . .

Although I don’t see or hear this expression as much as “Black Hat”, it is simply the opposite of the above. [Good guys wore/wear white hats.]

The rules of etiquette regarding sitting in a car on social occasions are different from sitting in a business situation. The social rules for traveling by car are especially important when a man opens the door for a woman and when couples are sitting in a car. Smart people who want to move up the ladder of success know the rules and stick to them carefully.

In social situations, good manners require a well-mannered man to help a lady into the car from the curb before walking around the car to get inside. Ladies, everyone knows that you can open your own doors, but some of you are missing the point. Before 5:00 pm, you can be a lioness in the office. However, after 5:00 p.m. M., You better relax, turn into a kitten and stop stealing your man’s manhood. Men, have no idea! Being attentive is a subtlety that is not lost on a classy woman. Even a simple gesture, like opening the car door for her, sends a message that you think she is worth being treated like a princess and are proud to be seen with her. If you have to, pretend until it becomes part of you.

The way couples feel when they travel together is an indication of their social class. When two men and two working-class women travel together, the two men sit in the front seats of the car and the women in the back seats. In the middle class, one couple sits in the front and the other couple sits in the back. Upper-class people choose a different arrangement. The wife of one couple sits in the front with the male driver of the other couple, while her companion sits with the driver’s partner in the back seat. The man in the back seat gives in to the woman giving her the seat of honor – on the rear passenger side. The assumption of this seating arrangement is that a couple spends a lot of time talking to each other. A mixed seating arrangement encourages cross-talk, thus serving the purpose of being with each other – exchanging brilliant conversations, news, and ideas with everyone.

Does this all sound a bit pretentious? Perhaps, but if you are interested in joining the social club, you need to adapt your manners and mindset to the rules of acceptable behavior regarding car manners as in all areas of etiquette.

An unmistakable fact: my grandmother, Nannie, could make the best Snickerdoodle cookies. Too bad, then, that this isn’t his claim to fame (or is it infamy) in his little hometown. Because it’s there, in the peaceful agricultural surroundings of California’s San Joaquin Valley, that the sweetest old lady on this side of Pasadena was known for what the locals would ridiculously call disciplinary bread.

Nannie was a God-fearing woman who attended church, well, religiously. And as the ever vigilant churchgoer, Nannie believed it was her duty to bake pumpkin pie for the church bake sale. At least I think it was pumpkin pie; I didn’t try it because my mom forbade me to eat something Nannie had cooked unless mom tried it first: “And if I collapse, don’t eat it!” Nannie’s cakes were the only cakes that ended up under the bake sale table. On this single issue, the congregation unanimously agreed: If Myrtle brought a cake to any potluck / bake sale / fundraiser, quickly put it under and away from anything edible. Or send it to the Catholic Church across the street.

He meant well, as the enchilada casserole for the church picnic story will attest. As he got out of his Dodge Rambler with his steaming hot plate, all the church members whispered forward, just like in the Telephone game, warning the next one to “watch out for the enchilada casserole.” Nannie proudly placed the suspicious plate on the buffet table with all the other pork macaroni and bean stroganoffs and fried chicken, and saw her good friend, Mrs. Carmecito, one of the kindest ladies in church. Following the execution of what church tradition would label the Carmecito Sign, Nannie Squad would descend onto the blue and white Corningware plate and place it under the table where it could do no harm. Once Einstein, who was Mrs. Carmecito’s terrier dog, sniffed the plate under the table and proceeded down the middle of the hall. Soon poor little Einstein was seen sliding his butt across the ground and howling throughout the picnic. Witnesses swear they saw flames coming out of poor Einstein’s butt. The enchiladas that burned his butt on the way out were a warning: Woe to the victims of Myrtle’s casserole!

He once made piracanta jam. I really don’t even know what a piracanta is, but my mom insists to this day that they are poisonous berries. Nannie brought a couple of jars to our house and Mom called Dad to tell him that her mother was trying to kill us with piracanta jam. Dad told her not to be stupid; that he had eaten Nannie’s food all his life and was still alive. Mom just mumbled, “That explains it.”

Returning to the disciplinary bread: Someone in the village finally named it that way because no one knew what to call it. When Nannie made dinner for her children, she put away all the leftovers. At the end of the week, he would grab his trusty meat grinder and shred the leftovers he had. Salmon, apple pie, leftover tuna sandwiches, spaghetti, you name it; put it in the meat grinder. It would emerge as a chunk of gray matter that she would form into blocks. This anointing is what she would serve her guests and children for lunch, carefully sandwiched between two slices of bread. (Everyone knew they weren’t supposed to go to Myrtle’s for lunch.) Nannie could never understand why she didn’t have visitors around noon. Even the Fuller Brush Men would take the longest road between noon and two. She would surely invite them, but they would all withdraw. And I really don’t know how my dad survived childhood as he reportedly had a DL sandwich for lunch every day of his young life. He was a brave man. She once told me that when she came to school every day her teacher, Miss Broad, would trade her sandwich for one that she had made. They never told Nannie as they didn’t want to hurt her feelings, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Broad for saving my father’s life.

But the bread itself was not the reason for the legend that is still told today from Bakersfield to Sacramento. Nannie’s infamous bread was responsible for saving Mr. Linden’s life.

Nannie had learned that Mr. Linden was feeling a little bad, so she appeared at her front door with a block of gray matter and told her that he was good at what ailed him. However, Tales of The Loaf had preceded Nannie, and after thanking her profusely for her consideration, she left the loaf on the kitchen counter to dispose of later. Mr. Linden, who was on his way to bed later that night, decided he needed a snack. The bread was still on the table; he had forgotten to throw it away. At that moment he heard a noise in the far corner of the kitchen. A flick of the light switch revealed that it was a big old bear, standing right there, six feet from him. The back door was open but he was between the door and the bear. At that moment, the black bear reared up on its hind legs and began to growl. Mr. Linden thought he was lost. Eagerly searching for a weapon, the closest thing within reach was Nannie’s disciplinary bread, which she grabbed and pulled as hard as she could. He heard a thud as the bread hit the bear’s head, knocking the unsuspecting ursine unconscious. Mr. Linden escaped and went to the nearest neighbor to call animal control.

Nannie’s disciplinary bread played the part. The whole town woke up to the headline: Bear’s nightly visit is no laziness. Nannie never made disciplinary bread again.

Time for those horrible Halloween horrors, folks!

So, let’s ask ourselves, why are today’s horror movies so horrible now?

Have they finally reached the ghastly pinnacle of ghastly perfection that they sought for all those decades? And what happened to those nostalgic horror classics of yesteryear that were pretty benign in comparison? And are people happy, angry or sad that graphic horror scenes enhanced with high-tech special effects are so incredibly realistic now?

Over the past seventy years or more, horror movies have changed dramatically and horribly. This spooky genre has literally evolved from low-budget B-movies and cheesy special effects (though they are considered memorable classics) to hideously graphic and hideous CGI-enhanced masterpieces of hideous proportions. If you’ve ever seen the old classic movies about Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, the Werewolf, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, even the Invisible Man, etc. Do not classify them as what we now know as Horror, considering the extreme changes that have been evolving.

Today’s horror movies involve enough blood to fill several bathtubs, enough carnage and blood to make a weak man vomit all his guts, and truly realistic CGI special effects to make you think what you’re really seeing, and those graphic scenes can induce horrible nightmares in your sleeping hours.

We have a host of serial killer and serial killer movies, armies of flesh and brain devouring zombies, blood sucking vampires, gruesome cannibals and other grotesque creatures beyond your imagination that are just the tip of the iceberg.

As if that wasn’t enough, the element of gruesome torture and violence has crept onto the spectrum, especially with the SAW movie franchise. Forcing victims to inflict psychological or physical torture to free themselves (such as shackling their leg to escape) has become very popular. Let’s not forget Strange landand the three lodging house films. Then we have cannibalism movies, like Silence of inocents, The Hills Have Eyes, Voracious, Cannibal holocaustetc.

Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, the Werewolf, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and all the others have been replaced by characters like Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Pinhead, Hannibal Lecter and others. And, of course, legions of hideous zombies walk the Earth. There are so many zombie movies, dating back to the 1930s, that you would go crazy trying to count them all! I almost do it! (I found them all on Wikipedia) And they have become so graphically hideous that I suspect they are actually real! In fact, I’ve heard people (mostly conspiracy theorists and crazies) declare that a zombie-like virus could indeed become a reality (perhaps because diabolical genetic engineers play God – or the Devil! !) And a large scale. The zombie pandemic now seems realistic and possible in our world! Oh!

We must ask ourselves the psychological questions: why do people want to be afraid? Why do we want to be exposed to violence and graphic horror scenes? Being your typical carnival rides wimp, I was always wary of roller coasters and those heartbreaking thrill rides, thinking that I was going to fall and plummet to my death, even though I was tightly tied. At such crazy rides, I would sometimes see loose change or purses or purses and other things flying out of people secured in their seats. If I lost something, it would normally be my lunch. Although many people have stronger stomachs than me, who can more easily enjoy thrills and chills, I admit I was not one of them. At first I even avoided horror movies, although as a child I liked the old classics, I guess because they used to be devoid of large amounts of blood and gore and other gruesome scenes, which has become the hallmark of current horror movies. . But in the last few years I’ve grown numb and I don’t mind seeing such hideous shit. I even learned to like those adorable zombies as they mindlessly stumble and groan and groan all the time and tend to like to eat brains, which are actually putrid, disgusting creatures that would disgust me as a child.

But do we want to be afraid because we hope to become numb to horror? Are we hiding from our own internal horrors by facing manufactured external horrors? Or because we think we deserve to be victims of some kind of element of horror in our lives? Do we think we deserve bad karma, and therefore exposing ourselves to tons of horror movies will help us achieve self-inflicted retribution? Or is it just a way to escape our otherwise boring lives? I don’t know, but I’m still looking for the answer, or answers. So far, all I know is that I find certain types of horror movies just fascinating, like those stupid, dumb zombies. I particularly like the comic versions, as described in Shawn of the dead, Fido, Zombieland, Y Aaah! Zombies! and others.

Alright, why are zombies all the rage right now? Vampires have been all the rage for a long time, least of all Frankenstein’s monster, and while some werewolves still run around, the return of the latest Wolf Man movie is making a futile attempt to get werewolves out of the closet. We’ve seen a few Mummy movies, starring Brendan Fraser, but these would fall more into the Adventure genre. But most of today’s horrors are extremely intense in blood and gore and violence and torture and those nightmarish elements that are not for the faint of heart or stomach. Some viewers may view these films as visual pollution, horrible things, or horrible nightmares, while others view them as emotionally and psychologically stimulating. As if they deserve to be scared with their fucking skulls!

I wonder if anyone will resort to creating horror movies that revisit the style and melodrama of the old classics, where a lot is left to the imagination. Or are those days gone forever?

The most common notion of the day is “Obedience is a virtue and disobedience is a vice.” However, looking at history, we see a clear trend that it was through disobedience that we were able to achieve what we have achieved thus far. However, through obedience, we as humans only manage to create chaos and discomfort for all other humans.

The lifestyle of the Kalahari pygmies is the most primitive lifestyle source that we can find in modern society today. These people resemble the lives of the primitive man who walked the earth before Christopher Columbus landed in the American hemisphere. Despite all the war and changes in the world, these people seem to be the happiest people living in what we call hell, the unforgiving Kalahari Desert. They do not know of obedience to any system or man, they live in a symbiotic relationship with nature and over time, they have learned to enrich this relationship to the point where they can find water in the desert and live a very peaceful life in isolation.

Now looking at the other side of the dice, we, at our convenience, have trouble being truly independent. Because society has created us as a wheel of this self-destructive society directed by embedding “Obedience” in all aspects of our life, than to become operators of this machine called society, allowing us to be independent and disobedient. The problem is that the social operator turns the machine in a direction in which all the wheels will follow one after another in obedience and no one stops, which leads to the end of the days.

The common notion is: “Obedience is a virtue and disobedience is a vice.” However, when we look at our history to understand how we as humans came to be what we are, we see that the common notion about obedience is a false virtue. As the famous psychologist and author Erich Fromm says, “Human history began with an act of disobedience” (Fromm 246). Through the ages, from a Paleolithic man to a Neolithic man, due to various acts of disobedience such as challenging the knowledge that Paleolithic man possessed as a hunter and cave dweller, we managed to achieve our mental and spiritual growth to reach the peaks of the space age.

Also, looking at this from the religious aspect, we see that throughout the Bible it was due to disobedience that man began to free himself. King David’s disobedience regarding the association with Bathsheba started the lineage of Jesus, who is the ultimate symbol of freedom and all that is good. Furthermore, throughout the Bible we see Jesus constantly challenging the law of Israel to free the people of Israel from the Pharisaical law (Garrett Luke 23: 1, 23: 24).

In addition to religion, when looking at the world socio-political scene we see that due to various acts of disobedience on the part of a handful, many people were able to enjoy freedom. George Washington and John Adams, branded traitors by the British for disobeying their law, created what we know as the United States; Abraham Lincoln, against the majority agrees to almost divide the country and create a civil war abolished slavery. Similarly, Martin Luther King Jr., by disobeying the common notion of segregation, set our fellow African Americans free, allowing us to have an African American president in 2009, ushering in a new era in American history.

However, we remain attached to the theory of obedience as a virtue. Looking back in history, we see that our slavery of obeying at all costs or the “Go with the wave” mentality resulted in the end of civilizations. The destruction of Troy VII (Thompson), beyond the myth, we see as a decision made by the minor city-states of the Greek Empire to seize the best trading post and have the monopoly of trade in the Aegean Sea that ended the age of gold of Athens. (Thompson). In addition, during Roman times the assassination of Gaius Julius Caesar by Brutus, despite what Shakespeare says, was an act of obedience to the Senate, which led to the death of a great leader and 16 years of bloodbath that concluded the Roman era. the pages of history (Richard 175).

Volumes of books can be written based on the theme of how much obedience at the end of days has contributed to many strong civilizations and systems. So what makes man more likely to obey than to disobey? The human being is a social creature, during childhood man learns by copying what others do in his environment. When the mother points to the father and says “papa”, the baby with time points is the male figure that is always around the mother and says “papa” without knowing if this male figure is really his father or not.

In the same way, it is during childhood that we learn the art of pleasing people and giving up our independent thinking. By doing something that makes Mom and Dad happy, you get a reward, and when you please your teachers, you finish school easily. This relationship between a student and the school is a perfect example of how we mold ourselves to be obedient and not disobedient; a sticky thorn in the heel of people that keeps us locked in foreign paradises. As the child grows, he has become so dependent on other people that his entire life has become a mirror of another person. The fact that the type of hair cream, the car we drive, our partners we choose, even the toilet paper we flush down the toilet reflects the needs of our friends, and keeps us chained to a false sense of security and obedience. . For one to be truly free and independent, one must “have the courage to say no to powers (and) disobey.” (Since 249).

Subsequently, we cannot say No to the powers that we have in our hands, be it religious, governmental, educational or any other, because of the sense of power that we feel when obeying it and the sense of security that we feel. Furthermore, the three-line experiment discussed by Solomon E Asch in is the article “Opinions and Social Pressure” where an individual subject, when put under pressure by a majority on an opinion of good or bad. The subject tends to be wrong in his opinions when trying to satisfy the opinion of the majority despite being right in his individual opinion (Asch 207). This clearly shows us that social pressure also plays an important role in why we cannot say no.

The importance of being independent in our opinions and decisions is beneficial not only for us as individuals but also for the entire world. By studying systems like the Third Reich designed to reach all aspects of all social levels, we see that when man obeys authority without hesitation, its effects can be devastating not only for the individual but for the entire world. The end of World War II on November 25, 1945, initiated the final chapter of Hitler’s Germany, which was the ultimate obedience structure and the first chapter of humanity. The Nuremberg trials where all war criminals faced charges for their reversals with the Holocaust, gave us a good overview of the extreme capacity for obedience that human beings possess even to kill 5 million people because the hierarchy authorized it.

During the trial, not all of the defendants pleaded guilty, but except for a few, all of the defendants were guilty of counts three and four (Crimes against humanity) (Taylor and Kent 14), after which the prosecution provided witnesses and evidence, including the shrunken one. heads from the Buchenwald concentration camp.
