5 steps to know your target market

There is a good chance that the target market you are looking for is similar to yours. After all, you are probably interested in a topic that really sounds familiar to you and that is why you want to spread the word. Like us; we are learning about online marketing and defining our target market so that what we write actually reaches the people who may find it useful. It really comes down to these 5 steps to knowing your target market.

1. Who are they?

Since people are everywhere with their interests, and in the online world common demographics are no longer as useful, we must think differently. Bring your audience to life in your imagination. A good way to get a first feel for things is to think about your personality traits. For example, you can use the DISC method to evaluate yourself and think about what pushes you on the buttons. Then compare this with who you think your audience will be. See where you are by finding a free online DISC test.

Keep asking questions. Are they young or old? What makes your heart beat faster? Do they consider wealth and freedom the highest good? Are they more interested in health or sustainability? Would they have a specific skill set like computer programming, math, painting, or singing?

2. What do they do?

It’s good to wonder where your target market is currently spending its days. Are they working office jobs? Small business owners? Self-employed? Or maybe they are housewives (or dads!). It could be that you are getting closer to those who travel, where are they going?

3. Where do they hang out online?

There seems to be a place online for everyone. While professionals may focus on LinkedIn and Twitter, young people are using Snapchat, and creatives are excited about Pinterest. Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are for pretty much everyone these days, but within these platforms there are many different groups that you can join, depending on interest and location.

4. What do they want?

You could say that everyone runs towards pleasure or away from pain. On the pleasure side, you might consider things like learning new things like healthy eating, how to travel on a limited budget, how to gain more freedom in your work by increasing your efficiency. Or in the case of this post, how to effectively reach your audience. You need to understand what someone feels they really need, so that what you write can lead them to more empowering feelings or actions.

5. What prevents them from acquiring it?

When you understand who the person you’re talking to is, where they spend their time, and what they want, you’re in the right direction. That is what makes you understand what prevents you from acquiring it. Perhaps something like the ‘rules of society’ makes you feel like you are limited in what is possible, while all that is needed is to step out of this point of view to see freedom. Some people have no idea what they want in life and are overwhelmed by the idea of needing a ‘strong passion’ for something, while practice and inspiration is all they need.

However, most people need a system. A friendly hand. Some comfort in knowing that the steps you are taking are heading in the right direction. It’s okay to try. One step at a time. And it’s certainly okay to feel a little lost at some point, to take comfort in what others have to show you as an example.

So answer these 5 questions to know your target market. Everything is in the relationship we have between us. We all want to be understood. So the better you know who you are dealing with, the better you can communicate with them.
