Paul Runyan (July 12, 1908 – March 17, 2002)

Considered short for golfers, Paul Runyan stood at 5-foot-7, and while he didn’t have a great long game, his short game was unparalleled among his peers. He is now considered one of the most influential short game players of all time and his techniques have been taught to thousands of golfers over the years.

Paul Runyan won 29 times on the Tour during his illustrious career, winning the PGA Championship twice, in 1934 and again in 1938. He even led the US Open after three rounds in 1951. Paul Runyan was an iron horse of a golfer and taught up to 20 lessons a week well into his nineties. Paul Runyan began his golf career as a caddy and later became an apprentice at a golf course in his hometown of Hot Springs, Alabama. He turned pro at the age of 17 and later became an assistant pro at Forest Hills Golf Course in White Plains, New York. He was Craig Wood’s assistant in 1921 and thirteen years later, in 1934, he defeated Wood in a playoff for the first of his two PGA Championship victories.

Paul Runyan defeated Sam Snead 8 and 7 for his second PGA Championship, which is the most lopsided Championship final victory in history. Of course, that was back when the tournament was still being decided in a match play format.

Bekuo has also been upgrading their mattresses lately. The private rooms, in my experience, have always had good beds, and now the dorms have high quality mattresses and matching toppers. When I ask the owners how they can afford to make all these upgrades while charging just $12 a night for a dorm bed, they point out that the lodge isn’t their only income (Ramon is a vet and Storm does design work), so they don’t need the income from the shelter to survive. They are also quick to point out that the hostel is basically home for them and their employees, and that they would not want guests sleeping in their own home on an uncomfortable old mattress and having nothing to entertain themselves with. The owners even asked Hosteling International (HI) to remove Hostel Bekuo from their website. HI is one of the largest hospitality organizations in the world and was sending quite a few bookings to Bekuo, but according to Ramon and Storm, they were not sending the type of backpackers they were looking for and it was very difficult to maintain a cool/relaxed atmosphere in the hostel with these guests.

It has taken years for other shelters to start opening in San Jose. For a long time, Toruma, Pangea, and Backpackers existed. But today, there are a handful of high-end hostels like Hostel Bekuo, Mi Casa Hostel near La Sabana, and Hostel 1911 near La Clínica Bíblica. Still, though, even these higher-tier hostels fall short when compared to Bekuo. Other hostels that have opened in recent years like Casa Yoses, Kabata, Tuanis, Tranquillo and a few more have really fallen in the quality area. It is as if they have become too heavy a burden for the owners, and their facilities continue to deteriorate, rather than improve.

If you are looking for a place to stay in San José, Hostel Bekuo is the easy choice these days. If some of the other smaller hostels start to follow suit, that may not be the case forever, but until they do, as they say in Bekuo: “If you’re paying $12 a night somewhere else, you’re being fucking”.

Facilities:

Serafin BJJ is located within Ultimate Fitness Evanston.

Parking: There is adequate parking around the building and on the street. Be sure not to park in the dry cleaner’s lot directly in front of the building. They are old and grumpy. Don’t park there.

Jeff Serafin has an amazing space to train in. There is a cage, full boxing ring, heavy bags, PLENTY of room for mats, weight equipment (including other training equipment like ropes and two additional rooms with even more equipment), lockers, and showers. There was plenty of space on the mat with all 15 people training on a Saturday morning.

My experience:

Traffic was really good on my Saturday morning excursion to Serafin BJJ in Evanston, IL. Despite everything, I was late (more or less for my month), so I missed what would have been the first 10 minutes of a Natural Ginastica class. Anyway, I wanted to include it in the review because it’s an amazing addition to the classes offered at Serafin BJJ and is currently not listed on their website.

The warm up exercises for the class were short and simple, but definitely sufficient. From there we go directly to the technique.

The technique of the day (and of the previous classes as well) was to work the shoulder blade.

We check the entries in the shoulder blade and drill them.

We then discussed a way to break the opponent’s stance once we lock and pierce them.

Next up were two alternate shoulder blade locks (near and far lateral shoulders) and we drilled.

The last one was a shoulder blade neck choke based on whether or not the opponent gives you the opposite shoulder. This was also pierced.

I wrote this in a specific way to make a point. Jeff teaches each move individually and doesn’t overwhelm students with instructions (as some instructors can). I noticed that most of the students did not have great difficulties when they were allowed to practice on their own. Break things down into understandable parts.

Also, Jeff spent a lot of time talking about the theory behind what we were doing, why we were doing it, and why it would work. If you’ve never read Matt Thornton’s blog on the effectiveness of Aliveness training, you should. I don’t know if Jeff has it, but I think the method that Thornton and Serafin use to teach the technique is one of the most effective methods to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I loved what Jeff said about the shoulder blade being a stance/guard and not just a submission.

Along the same lines, after the technique, we sparred at 50-60% with a partner who already had the shoulder blade on. I won’t go into a big diatribe about why this is essential for understanding, but I was really happy that Jeff used this method to reinforce what he just taught. The things he taught that day stayed with me and immediately became part of my game because I was able to practice it on a slightly resistant partner. Very good idea to develop muscle memory.

The class was mostly made up of blue and white belts, but I don’t think this is typical of Serafin BJJ. Most of Jeff’s top belts were taking a break because the class I got to was right after a big competition and many of them were taking the day off to recuperate or travel. Still, Jeff’s blue belts are awesome. Almost everyone has been with him since his early days in BJJ and it was obvious.

After the silver shoulder sparring, we moved on to free sparring where I was paired with blue belts, and also had the opportunity to shoot with Jeff. All the blue belts caused me a lot of problems and I can say that the skill level in Serafin BJJ is very high. I have been to gyms in the past (before the start of this company), where I was able to dominate everyone except the instructor. This is NOT the case for Jeff’s students. I was swept, ridden, beaten, etc. by a very skilled group of guys.

The combat was very intense, but controlled. Each person played a unique game (this is good because some gyms have everyone trying to play the exact same game) and each match was competitive. Even the white belts I observed played games based on solid basics, each with their own individual style.

Shooting with Jeff was a fantastic experience. He stressed the importance of control and when I rode with him, I felt that control. Jeff has his own game of his and is very good at it (watch out for those kimuras!), but he is absolutely amazing at closing out your game. I tried everything:

From the shore? No.

Berimbolo roll? No.

Okay, guard closed? Boop

Half guard? Shit, I forgot he loves the half guard. No.

Alright. He pulls off the guard. They sweep me like it’s my first day.

When the time came, I was both discouraged and overjoyed. He didn’t want the thing to end, but he had never felt the control and patience that Jeff had with me. I was different being controlled, but not crushed. Great experience.

Berimbolo total failure.

Jeff was exceptionally hospitable and very welcoming to a visitor. He surprised me to learn that the more he travels, the more I discover that we all know the same people. Jeff has been a part of the BJJ scene in the Northwest Indiana, Illinois and Chicago areas for over ten years. Jeff and I sat and talked for a long time after he finished class and I think that’s pretty typical of Jeff. He was very willing to give his time to benefit his students.

Evanston students are very lucky to have Jeff. His academy is great, he has excellent training equipment and excellent instruction. With that being said, I hope this review has been an accurate representation of him and his academy. When choosing an instructor, it is often necessary to take his or her personality into account. I’ll (hopefully) be doing an interview with him soon.

Florida DUI insurance is auto insurance that meets certain coverage and procedure requirements as prescribed by law. This regulation must be followed and maintained in order for DUI drivers to maintain a valid Florida license. Increased limits, reporting compliance and a $15.00 fee are required. These additions to an auto insurance policy are similar requirements experienced by other high-risk drivers. Unique to a Florida DUI insurance policy are the high liability limits of 100/300/50; ten times the financial responsibility requirement for non-DUI drivers.

The FR44 (Uniform Certificate of Financial Responsibility) filing is the method used to verify insurance compliance for drivers convicted of DUI. The Certificate (Form) is filed (submitted) to the Florida Office of Financial Responsibility electronically by the insurance company after the policy is purchased. This process is the last step in retrieving a valid Florida license. A policy is first purchased from a licensed Florida insurance company that insures the MVR Financial Responsibility case number. This is a tracking number assigned to each individual DUI driver. The driver’s license can be reinstated when the DMV database is updated indicating your compliance and eligibility. Some drivers have presented a printed copy of the FR44 certificate, which they received at the point of sale, to the correct clerk at the DMV, and they got their license reinstated immediately. Naturally, a reinstatement fee will apply.

The compliance period is three years and insurance companies are required to notify the State if a policy is terminated for any reason. If the DUI driver does not replace the coverage with a new eligible policy, their license will be suspended. Reinstatement occurs only after the process is repeated and additional high reinstatement fees are paid. The process is quick and easy, but the coverage can be expensive. Drivers who are not used to carrying high limits experience the greatest increase in their auto insurance premiums.

Policyholders who regularly maintain high limits (100/300/50 or higher), such as those required for a rental vehicle, may be excluded from the FR44 requirement, as long as this coverage was in effect at the time of the DUI citation. The FR44 policy imposes high limits of liability and additional stringent subscription requirements. For example, as of May 4, 2012, cancellation of all insurance policies with a Florida FR44 filing is not allowed, and insurance companies generally will not allow driver exclusions when there is a filing. Due to these restrictions, policyholders are forced to pay premiums in full with no monthly payments and will not be able to exclude a higher rated driver, such as a newly licensed teenager. Having the flexibility to make payments and exclude drivers is a benefit for any insured.

Interestingly, since 2007, when Florida separated DUI drivers from all other high-risk drivers by requiring the filing of FR44s instead of SR22s, the loss rates for the FR44 policyholder pool have been very favorable to companies. insurance companies. Lower claim payouts from lower loss rates allow insurance companies to compete for lower rate FR44 policies. Some companies still treat DUI drivers harshly by turning down new applicants and not renewing current policy holders. If you are in this situation, simply shop around as there are many companies competing for these policies.
