Amount of disk space

The requirement for a small or medium website is between 10 and 100 MB of disk space.

When looking at the size of the HTML pages, you will notice that the average size is very small, smaller than 1K. But by looking at the size of the images used within the pages, you will often find them several times larger than the page itself.

5 and 50K of server space is the expected consumption of each HTML page that depends on the use of images or other elements that can consume disk space.

More disk space is required for websites that plan to use a lot of images or graphics (not to mention sound files or movies).

Before looking for your web host, make sure you know their requirements.

Monthly traffic

The monthly data transfer for a small or medium website will take between 1 and 5 GB.

On the other hand, monthly traffic on larger commercial sites consumes more than 100 GB.

Before signing the contract with the hosting provider, make sure the following is verified:

 What are the limitations of the monthly transfer?

 Will your site be shut down if you go beyond volume?

 Will the turnover be higher if the volume is exceeded?

 Will it cover future requirements?

 Is it easy to update?

Connection speed

Your web host should offer a relatively faster connection for your visitors, who often connect via modem.

During the early days of the Internet, connecting through a T1 was considered a fast connection. However, modern speeds are much faster.

A byte is 8 bits long, and that is the usual number of bits used to transfer a character (a letter or a digit). 14,000 to 56,000 bits per second (bps) is the transfer rate for low-speed communication modems. The range is 2,000 to 7,000 characters per second, almost 1 to 5 pages of typed text.

Before doing any deals with the hosting providers, do some research on some other websites on their servers to get a good experience on your network speed. Also, compare the other sites with your site to see if it has the same requirements. Getting in touch with other customers is another alternative.

Disk space and the amount of monthly traffic is not the only requirement in web hosting. This will depend on the website you plan to install.
