Betting in the United States

Until recently, the federal government imposed a four-year ban on legal sports betting in the United States. That was until the US Supreme Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was unconstitutional. The ruling opened the door for states to begin the process of legalizing sports betting. The number of states that are currently offering some form of legal sports betting is growing quickly. Some states are allowing legal sports betting through retail sportsbooks, while others are offering legal sports betting online.

In the past, Nevada was the undisputed sports betting mecca of the United States. However, it has lost its crown due to increasing competition. New Jersey has overtaken Nevada as the sports betting state of choice. It was New Jersey that paved the way for sports betting in the United States, as the state was the first to legalize sports betting. New Jersey also became the first state to legalize online sports betting.

In August, the State of Oregon passed a sports betting bill. The bill did not require new legislation to be passed, but the bill did not have a large number of supporters. It was approved by the legislature but vetoed by Gov. Janet Mills.

Legal Sports Betting in the United States

The state of Alaska has a sports betting bill that is on the legislative docket. The state legislature is expected to revisit the issue in 2023. The bill is not supported by the general public, but does have a lot of support from the Governor. Unlike most states, Alaska does not permit sports betting in retail settings. However, the state is considering allowing sports betting on tribal lands.

New Mexico has legalized sports betting on tribal lands. In addition, the Oneida Nation is the first tribe to negotiate an amendment with the state to permit sports betting on tribal lands. The Oneida Nation currently does not offer online sports betting, but it does have retail sportsbooks on tribal properties. In the future, other tribes might be interested in similar deals.

Alaska’s legislative process is slow, but the state’s two mega-influential tribes, the Arapaho and Shoshone, have indicated that they are planning to enter the market. In addition, the state has recently received mobile sports betting licenses from the state lottery commission. This will shape the market as it is regulated.

Wyoming became the sixth state to legalize sports betting on September 9, 2021. The state legislature passed LD 585, which allows sports betting in online or mobile formats. In addition, the state’s two tribal casinos, the Valley River and Harrah’s Cherokee, recently completed construction of sportsbooks. In 2021, the state will offer three sportsbooks to its residents. These sportsbooks will be operated by BetMGM and Fubo Sportsbook.

Tennessee became the eighth state to legalize sports betting on September 19, 2021. The state legislature approved online/mobile-only sports betting without the retail component. In addition, the state lottery commission issued mobile sports betting licenses to the two tribal casinos.
