In the late 1800s, a German inventor named Heinrich Hertz discovered wireless radio. He did it when he demonstrated that it is possible to send power point to point without the use of wires.

An Italian businessman and inventor known as Guglielmo Marconi is considered the great Father of Radio as he turned that discovery into wireless radio. He also obtained the patent and opened his own business.

Another expert, David Sarnoff, introduced the concept of broadcasting when he offered his services to the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of the US. He suggested that the company might want to try wireless technology to send music to other people’s homes.

As far as “Disc Jockey” is concerned, Lee Deforest is known as the first on the list for playing music from the great Eiffel Tower.

In Pittsburgh, KDKA was the first licensed radio station in the US. KDKA was actually founded by Frank Conrad and became owned by Westinghouse. The company made radio kits and sold them for $10 at the popular Horne’s department store. Also, Conrad advertised those kits on KDKA. Curiously, it was the first type of radio advertising; however, it was not the real advertisement.

In New York City, WEAF showed the first real commercials in the US.

In fact, the first official news reports aired on a radio station in the US and it was about the Harding vs. Cox election results, according to KDKA.

The golden age of radio was between the 1920s and 1940s. At that time, radio became very popular. This was the same time when radio was the largest medium in the US During this time, radio had good block programming that was like television today. The programs were transmitted by blocks of time. Normally, the duration of these programs was up to one hour. Popular shows included soap operas, sitcoms, detective shows, action shows, news shows, dramas, and many other shows.

During the great days of radio, some corporations arose to make programs that would be broadcast on different radio stations. In reality, the stations were under the ownership of corporations. Some of them were simply affiliated. The first network was known as NBC. At first, NBC consisted of two networks: the Blue Network and the Red Network. Additionally, the FCC established a rule that did not allow a corporation to own more than one network. So NBC sold the Blue Network. The new owners turned the network into the American Broadcasting Company.

Also, during the great days of Radio, dramatic programs were called Soap Operas. It was the soap opera companies that sponsored the dramas.

In addition, during World War II, the radio became the best medium to transmit news. Also, Edward R. Murrow was the most popular war correspondent.
