Explore Penang Hill

Visitors to Penang Malaysia will come across many wonderful places and attractions to visit in this small but beautiful island state. Penang Hill is one of the must see places you must go when you are there. Penang Hill, also known as Bukit Bendera, has many wonders to explore.

This hill is located in Ayer Itam, about 6 kilometers from the capital of Penang, Georgetown. This place, about 823 meters high, is the highest peak in Penang Malaysia. If you want to have a good panoramic view of Penang Malaysia, Penang Hill is definitely the right place for you.

Penang Hill used to be called Flagstaff Hill in the old days. Penang Hill is the oldest colonial hill station in Malaysia, where it was built in 1923. During the colonial period, many bungalows were built on Penang Hill as the climate is much cooler here compared to the city below. The former British governor of Penang used to settle here. You can still see these bungalows with their unique 19th century architectural design located on the hill.

How do you climb Penang Hill? You can take your time to walk there or you can take the famous funicular train on the Penang Hill Railway. The train leaves every 20-25 minutes and costs you only RM4 per seat. The journey will take you about 30 minutes before reaching the top. The downside to using the train is that you will miss the closest view of nature that you can get by walking there.

For nature lovers, this hill has a collection of beautiful flora and fauna to explore. You could see plants like tree ferns, tropical oaks, cycads, carnivorous pitcher plants, and bamboo trees. There are also interesting varieties of animals here. You will see animals such as birds, giant black squirrels, wild dogs, and dark leaf monkeys that inhabit this hill.

Visitors can also hike through the jungle here, with routes starting from the botanical gardens. It will take you around 3-4 hours to use this trail. When you reach the top, you can see the Penang view and the wonderful colonial bungalows from here.
