Double Attack Blackjack is another variant of this popular board game. In recent years, substitutes have appeared (and disappeared) from the casino boxes. Currently the most active variants are Blackjack Switch, Spanish 21, Free Bet Blackjack and Three Card Blackjack.

How the game is played

• Bend – on any two cards in the initial attack bets and double up to the original bet.
• Pull apart – any pair. Players must place an equal amount for both initial and double attack bets.
• Give up – When the dealer does not have a blackjack, players can turn over half of their bets, even after hitting, splitting or doubling.

Optional Bust It! Side bet

This optional side bet pays if the dealer bust with exactly three cards. Otherwise, the bet loses. Players can bet from one dollar up to their initial bet, but not more than 50 dollars. Here is the winning pay table:

Things to consider when playing

According to the simple basic strategy of blackjack:

• If a dealer’s upcard is a 2 or a 3, it is considered that neutral

• If the dealer has a 4.5 or a 6, the dealer is considered weak

• If the dealer has a 7 through an ace, it is strong

Remember that players have no cards when choosing to attack or not.

The 5/2 insurance payout (for the few players who take this option) is more than double the standard 2/1, however when insurance is taken, players are betting that the dealer has a blackjack. With 32 10 eliminated from an eight-deck game, there is less blackjack chance for the dealer and the player. Folding down is also less effective because there are fewer tens.

Here is a recommended strategy for deciding whether to double attack or not:

• If a dealer’s up card is 2 or 3, make your minimum attack bet

• If the up card is a 4.5 or a 6, make your maximum attack bet

• If the face-up card is 7 through Ace, no make an attack bet
