I often find myself thinking, “they (ie other moms) should know better than that,” or “isn’t that a little rude?”, or “I can’t believe they think that’s cool.” Maybe since I’m older, I was raised when there were certain social graces that everyone knew how to follow. But now, many moms behave in ways that I can’t always tolerate. Here are ten ways to tactfully manage your child’s social interactions:

1. Party Etiquette: If your child is invited to a children’s birthday party, some reciprocity is expected (especially if your child attends the party). If they invite you, you should invite them. Yes, I know some parents need to keep parties small for financial reasons, but if that’s the case, have a party in your backyard or basement. Kids just want to run and have fun.

Please RSVP to the party invitations as soon as possible. Don’t show up without an RSVP: If you don’t know if you can make it, let them know as soon as you can. Parents hosting the party don’t know how many party bags to make etc. If you RSVP to say you’re coming, then come! If an emergency arises, call the other parent to let them know as soon as possible. Also, if your child is invited to a party, that doesn’t mean all of their siblings can attend too. The invitation is for the child whose name is on the envelope. If it is an electronic invitation that is sent to the parents’ email, clarify which child or children must attend.

If your child is attending a birthday party, don’t show up empty-handed. A gift is expected (unless donations are requested to a charity instead). There are plenty of gifts under $5 that kids are happy with. Browse the dollar store as a last resort.

2. Play Date Etiquette – Play dates should also be reciprocated. If you can’t arrange a playdate at home, go to the park.

If another mom asks if you want a playdate, contact her right away. Don’t leave them hanging wondering if it’s a yes or a no. If you don’t know her hours, tell her.

If you have a young child, always offer to stay for the playdate, especially if your child has separation anxiety or you know they may be a “handful.”

3. Playground Etiquette – Younger children must have a parent or babysitter present while on the playground. If your child needs help with the equipment, the parent or babysitter should be the one to help, not the other moms or dads. I have seen some parents and babysitters let the kids run free on the playground while they sit and talk on their cell phone completely ignorant of what is going on. Once, while in the inner courtyard of a mall, a little boy sat with us for 15 minutes (I gave him a snack because he asked for it) and the babysitter was nowhere to be found. She had no idea who the child belonged to, but eventually a young woman who looked embarrassed came to claim the child. This was a small enough playground that if she was there, she would have seen it with us (I guess she had some shopping to do, ahem!)

4. Don’t gossip about other kids to other moms. Gossip is downright bad no matter who it is. If you have a real problem with a certain child, call his mother directly and discuss it. No one else needs to know or hear about the problem.

5. Don’t tell other moms how to raise their children. If you have a problem with another child and you need to tell her mother about it, do so tactfully. What works for one child may not necessarily work for another, so she skips the part about how she would handle it herself or what she does with her child. Chorus of lecturing other moms about how she enforces the rules, how she requires them to eat their meals, etc. The vast majority of mothers do a completely adequate job of raising their children. Unless you are genuinely concerned about the welfare of a child, don’t get involved.

6. Do not comment on another child’s physical appearance. This is common sense, right? Apparently not for some people. Please refrain from commenting on how tall another child is, how short another child is, how heavy or skinny a child is, etc. Chances are if a child is too big or too small, it could be something the mother and/or child are sensitive about. Your comments only state the obvious and lead to embarrassment or hurt feelings. Keep it to yourself!

7. Do not discipline other children. If you are at the park or in an area where a lot of children are playing, and a child does something that is clearly not right, do your best to find her mom and discuss it. If you can’t find the other mother, gently approach the child and say, “Honey, my son/daughter doesn’t like being pushed, can you be a little nicer to him/her?” or “My son just got that bike for Christmas and it’s not ready for anyone else to ride yet.” In fact, I was in a park when a child started riding another child’s bike and the mother of the bike owner yelled, “THIS IS NOT YOUR BIKE, GET OFF!” On another occasion, I heard a mother tell a child (not hers) “you have to learn to share”, the child’s mother was sitting there and raised her eyebrows at the comment. I know there are times when you want the mother of a child to take certain steps, but that doesn’t give you the right to take those steps for them.

8. Don’t punish your own child in front of other children (or parents). Yes, I know there are times when you need to tell your child to stop doing something, but whenever possible, step aside and say so quietly. Constantly yelling or scolding your child in public can give other children “license” to do the same. This can lead to other children ganging up on yours or other parents labeling your child a troublemaker. Another option for less urgent matters is to bring it up and discuss it once he is home alone. Similarly, don’t announce to others that your child is grounded or “in trouble.” If punishing is part of your discipline, simply tell others that your child will not be able to attend that day.

9. Don’t brag. Period. If someone asks you about one of her child’s accomplishments, she answers honestly and doesn’t embellish. I realize that parents (and grandparents) feel like they’ve earned bragging rights, but it’s annoying and makes other parents and kids feel inferior. Actually, that’s one of the reasons other kids may not want to hang out with yours. Your child’s achievements will stand on their own. Teach your child not to brag…he will be more respected if he doesn’t constantly sing his own praises.

Similarly, don’t brag to other parents about all the parties, play dates, or fun things your child is doing or going to do. Teach your child not to talk about play dates or parties with other children. If the child they are talking to is not invited, they feel hurt: no one likes to be left out. This not only hurts the child, it also hurts the mother.

10. If your child is going to the movies, the pool, or anywhere else admission is charged (even if invited by another child), send them with enough money to cover admission and perhaps a snack. Unless it’s a party, don’t assume the other parent will cover the cost. They may turn down the money, but you should always offer.

The tradition of Christmas carols has been around for a long time. It is a tradition that many people love, both young and old. It’s a way to spread the holiday spirit without spending a lot of money. It’s also a way to lift the spirits of those who can’t get out during the holiday season, such as those confined to nursing homes. Christmas carols are also used as a way to raise money for charities during the Christmas season. How did such a moving tradition begin? Well, the answer to that is a bit sketchy.

Some say that Christmas carols were originally started by groups of drunken men and boys seeking alms. They would go from house to house singing folk songs or traditional drinking songs in exchange for money or a drink. While it is unknown if this actually happened, it is unlikely that Christmas carols as we know them originated from such a selfish act.

Another account of how Christmas carols originated involves a little girl named Carol Poles. Carol was supposedly reported missing from London in 1888, during which time serial killer Jack the Ripper was on the loose. This was a great cause for concern for the family and friends of the little girl, as well as for those who were looking for her. Legend has it that those who were looking for the little girl sang Christmas carols as they went from house to house, knocking on each door. They did so in an effort to reassure concerned residents and show that the search party meant no harm. Christmas carols are said to have continued from then on. This story has been proven to be a myth because Charles Dickens’s story A Christmas Carol, which had been written 50 years earlier, tells of people going from door to door singing Christmas carols.

The most credible account of the origins of Christmas carols takes place in England in the 1840s. After Prince Albert of Germany married Victoria of England, English peasants were eager to please and impress the newly minted royal family. married. After reading in a newspaper that Prince Albert greatly enjoyed Christmas carols, the peasants began to serenade him with them. Singing Christmas carols has been a tradition ever since. Methodists and Lutherans are said to have brought a modified version of this tradition to America. 8. When Harry met Sally. Another romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan, this time with Billy Crystal. Harry (Billy) and Sally (Meg) have known each other for years and are good friends. The two meet from time to time, share their current relationship problems and apparently have a great friendship. They don’t want to get physically involved with each other because they firmly believe that having sex spoils a perfectly good friendship. But the inevitable happens one night and things change forever between them.

9. Notting Hill. Hugh Grant stars as a simple bookshop owner whose life changes forever when he meets glamorous movie star Julia Roberts in this British romantic comedy set in Notting Hill. That the impossible can happen is what the movie shows when the two finally get married in a fairytale ending.

10. You have mail. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan team up again in this romantic film that is a tribute to the Internet age in which we live. Both have bookstores, but Hanks’ is a much larger chain of bookstores. Unaware of each other’s real identities, they become friends over email, using fictitious IDs. Eventually, the two find each other as themselves and fall in love.

The only two things you will need for this are:

1. The seeds of a custard apple

2. A bit of hair oil

Method:

Remove the pulp from the seeds and reserve the seeds. Wash the cherimoya seeds well under running water and allow to dry in bright sunlight for a minimum of 3 weeks until the seeds appear slightly hardened and completely dry.

Grind them in a blender.

Sift the powder with a tea strainer. Discard coarse particles.

The fine powder should be mixed with hair oil and used.

You can store the extra fine powder in a container so that it can be used in the future.

How exactly to use this powder:

When you feel that your hair has been infected with lice, at night, before going to bed, take about 1 tablespoon. of this powder and about 2 or 3 tablespoons. of any normal hair oil that you are used to applying to your hair.

Mix the powder into the hair oil lightly with your hands. Then gently massage your entire scalp with your fingers for about a minute until you feel it spread all over your scalp.

This dust is irritating to the eyes, so be careful not to get it into your eyes as it may cause eye damage. Therefore, do not use on very young children as it may accidentally get into their eyes.

After doing this, take a towel big enough to cover your scalp and tie it around your hair. If your hair is long, you can secure it in a bun or tie it up in a braid.

Leave this overnight and the next morning remove the towel from your head. You will notice dead lice and lice eggs/nits all over the towel. Dust your hair and gently comb it with a wide-tooth comb before shampooing.

Wash your hair well with any mild shampoo and lukewarm water. This should be done as you become affected by hair lice.

Treat your hair with this remedy until you are completely cured of hair lice. It will not cause any damage to your hair or scalp.

This is an easy remedy, without using any chemicals or any other form of medication that can have side effects and damage your hair in the long run.

The powder can be stored in a clean, dry container and kept on hand for future use as it won’t spoil.

Are you looking for lactose-free recipes? That desserts are left out of the diet of lactose intolerant people is simply wrong. I think almost everyone has a sweet tooth and just because your body and milk don’t get along doesn’t mean you have to do without them.

A super simple recipe is to make a chocolate flavored almond milk shake and mix with ice; if you want to add a little vanilla you can.

If you’re in the mood for a particular dessert, there’s probably already a recipe created for you to follow or you can make your own. There are many lactose-free recipes, also desserts, available on the internet, but I want to share some with you here.

The first recipe is super easy and super quick to make and only has 3 ingredients. If you love peanut butter cookies, try this recipe: mix well one cup of peanut butter, one cup of sugar, and one egg. Drop a tablespoon at a time on a cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 12 minutes in a preheated 325 degree oven. You can leave them in a “drop” shape or flatten them with a fork before baking. To keep them chewy, store in a sealed container; this recipe is also vegan and gluten free.

The next recipe is also very easy and great for the holidays or any time of the year. It is nut free and also soy free and full of flavor. Heat the following in a medium saucepan until bubbly:

29 ounces pumpkin (canned)

a cup of rice milk

¼ cup agave syrup or maple syrup

1 cup of honey

Cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks until thick and creamy, then add about a half cup of the pumpkin mixture to slowly heat the egg mixture without cooking the whites. Then slowly mix the rest of the egg mixture into the pumpkin mixture. Continue cooking until this mixture has thickened. Serve warm or cold in custard dishes.

Desserts can complete a wonderful meal and are wonderful to share with others when celebrating special occasions. When looking for lactose-free recipes, desserts shouldn’t be missing and there’s plenty to choose from.

This is something that nobody likes to talk about. Terminal illness can be one of the most stressful and devastating things a person goes through. Perhaps it goes without saying that it’s much worse for the person who’s sick, and that usually requires you to be there for them. Most people want to offer some kind of gesture to show their concern and support, but they are usually so overwhelmed that the most effort they are willing to put into buying a gift is a trip to the hospital gift shop. Understandably. Most would naturally feel that they have more important things to think about.

Of course, trivial as it may seem, a gift can be truly important to a sick or declining person. Many times we can get so entrenched in the more objective and medical side of things that we forget how important a patient’s feelings are to their recovery. The fact is that a person who does not want to die is less likely to die than a person who does want to die; Similarly, a person who believes they can recover is more likely to return to health than a person who believes they will die.

What I have tried to do here is to compile a list of gifts that go the extra mile to inspire your terminal loved one. Particularly important things in some cultures that promote health, good luck, and most important of all for your loved one, good vibes.

senbazuru

An old Japanese legend says that anyone who makes 1,000 origami cranes (called senbazuru when they are all grouped together) will get a wish granted by a crane, usually in the form of good luck or recovery from illness. In some versions of the legend, the person making the wish must fold all 1,000 cranes. However, I like to think that the crane in question wouldn’t mind if you bought your loved one some origami paper and helped them out for a while.

You may have seen them before despite their distant origins in Tibet nearly a thousand years ago. Usually, a set of prayer flags consists of five square flags of different colors. Each flag is printed with more than 400 sutras (typically via woodcuts), each dedicated to a different deity. The idea is that if the prayer flags are hung in a high place, as they fade and wear out, their sutras will permanently become part of the universe, thus spreading goodwill to all. It’s a great way to promote positive vibes and they make a beautiful decoration too.

This one is not too unfamiliar to most Americans, especially if you live in the Rocky Mountains. If you are unfamiliar with the legend, know that it is a Native American legend and you would do well not to misappropriate it (many people hang them in their rear view mirrors or on their walls as decorative pieces). Legend has it that once a woman prevented her son from crushing a spider on the wall that was spinning its web above where the woman slept. When the boy left, the spider revealed that he could speak and wished to repay the woman for her kindness. He left her net for the old woman to hold over her head while she slept, explaining that her bad dreams would become entangled in it and only her good dreams would be remembered. This gift is especially good for anxious children and is a symbol of good luck.

Of course, if you like to keep things simple, then go for it. Not all of us have to be Patch Adams and not all of us can be anyway. Not that folding an origami crane will turn you into Patch Adams, but it will probably be a welcome refrain from all worries. Unless you’re a doctor, this is the most you can do sometimes. And that’s okay! You are helping much more than you think just by being present. We need to de-stress and decompress for our bodies to be healthy. If you can provide that opportunity to do it, then you don’t need Patch Adams.

Writers are much like lawyers trying to protect their domain. They all compete with each other in some way and don’t like anyone writing for free or giving away their services at low cost. In fact, there are universities that specialize in journalism majors that many of these professional freelance writers go to and learn to write well.

But I’m actually the only freelance writer I know because I don’t get paid as it’s a hobby and I write volumes of articles (7000) and my name is Lance. So all these other so called professional writers who call themselves freelance writers are not doing it for free or calling themselves Lance. But professional writers hate me because I do it for free.

It seems to me that they are afraid and in 27 years in the business I have seen this before every time I enter an industry, associations and professionals hate the newcomer who does it differently from them. But you’d think a lot of truly liberal writers would see the light, since they claim to be so Enlightened!

No, they are protectionists, they look down on the up-and-comers because they can’t handle the competition. How pathetic really, so worried about a fan who isn’t with them? My question to the writing industry and professional writers; Wimps, is that all you got?

I’m not impressed with your apparent professionalism, your high fees, your lack of work ethic, your low returns, and frankly, some of your stuff is good, I’ll give you, but it’s not that great. You’re going to have to deal with the amateur writers, because the real freelance writer just stood up!

As soon as the “navel” falls off, it’s time for the first real bath. In addition to taking baby pictures of her in the cute little bathtub, be sure to take one of him/her wrapped in the hooded towel after the bath is over. And in your journal you can write about your baby’s age and her reaction to the bath.

Whether it’s a day trip to grandparents’ house, a weekend getaway, or even an entire vacation, baby’s first trip is an important milestone to preserve. Regardless of where you go on this first journey, your baby will encounter many sights, sounds, smells, people, etc. Write in a journal how your baby reacts to this new and different environment.

Baby’s first solid food

The first time your baby tries solid foods is a fun event to capture in photos. Facial expressions are priceless. Things to write in a journal include what the food was, how much your baby ate, and your baby’s reaction. When your baby is older, take some pictures of him/her eating only pasta with tomato sauce. A messy ketchup face is quite the sight!

Although a toothless smile is absolutely adorable, it’s exciting to see that first pearly white peeking out. Once you’re conspicuous enough to be seen in photos, take great close-ups for your scrapbook. Record in your journal the date the tooth first erupted and the date the photos were taken.

While it’s often difficult to capture your baby’s first step on camera, you’re sure to get plenty of photos of those first steps. Try putting them in sequential order, from letting go of the furniture to taking those wobbly steps to landing on a diapered bottom, to show your baby’s progress across the floor.

Depending on how old your baby is for their first Easter, here are some ideas for what to include in your scrapbook: dye Easter eggs, visit the Easter Bunny, go egg hunting, open your Easter basket, find eggs hidden by the Easter Bunny and preparing/eating Easter dinner.

Baby’s First Mother’s Day/Father’s Day

The first Mother’s Day/Father’s Day with your baby is, of course, very special. And you will surely take a lot of photos of mom/dad with the baby. In addition to journaling about how you spent the day, it’s interesting to journal about what you were doing and feeling on the previous Mother’s Day/Father’s Day. Perhaps she was pregnant and received gifts from her future baby. Maybe you had no idea that you would be a father in a year. Either way, it’s fun to remember what a difference a year makes.

Depending on how old your baby is for his first Halloween, you may or may not put him in a costume. If they are in costume, of course you will take a lot of photos of them in costume. If they are very young, putting them next to a very large pumpkin makes an adorable photo. Remember to also include photos of your pumpkin picking trip.

On our Thanksgiving pages, we often journal what we are thankful for. Of course, as new moms, we are very grateful for our new babies. Write in a journal the “little things” you are thankful for: how your baby holds your little finger tight when feeding, how your baby smells after a bath, the sound of your baby laughing when he makes faces, the quietness sensation of rocking your baby to sleep, etc. – to make these pages extra special.

There are so many memories you’ll want to capture in your photos: getting the tree, pruning it, Christmas Eve, Christmas morning, favorite gifts, and more. If you live in a cold climate, your baby’s first encounter with snow makes a fun scrapbook page. Even if your baby isn’t old enough to play in the snow, she can bundle him up and go outside so she can see the snow and feel it on her face. Also, if you have a nickname for your baby, that can make a cute page title.

In addition to the standard photos (singing Happy Birthday, blowing out the candles, eating the cake, opening presents, posing with party guests), take a photo of your baby right after she wakes up in the morning on her birthday. and another just before going to bed that night. That way, you can put these two images on a separate page and focus your journal on how your baby spent her first birthday, from when she woke up until bedtime.

If you still have your baby’s hospital hat (you know, the adorable little hats babies wear right after they’re born), put it on your baby’s head and grab your camera. Although it will look quite amusing stretched out on the head of a one-year-old, it’s quite a moving image. Put this photo on the last page of your baby’s first year album and you’ll have plenty of space to journal about the amazing year that has passed since you welcomed your baby into your life.

Whether you are a child or an adult, one simply cannot resist a sweet treat. Kids naturally have a sweet tooth, but excess sugar and empty calories aren’t ideal. So if you’re making them a snack or dessert, be sure to serve them something healthier. Strawberries are an excellent option to incorporate into children’s desserts, as they are delicious and nutritious!

• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

• 1 teaspoon cornstarch

• 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Combine rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, ginger, and kosher salt in a medium bowl. Add the melted butter and mix until the ingredients are well combined. Take 1/2 cup of the mixture to reserve. Press remainder into parchment paper-lined 8×8-inch baking pan.

Arrange half of the strawberries on top of the crust, top with cornstarch, lemon juice, and 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar. Sprinkle the remaining berries and reserved crumble on top. Bake in a preheated oven (375F) until golden brown and fruit is bubbly, about 35-40 minutes. Refrigerate to cool completely. When it’s ready, cut it into bars and enjoy!
