Business Networking: Tips for Shy People Who Want to Meet Customers at Networking Events

Are you hesitant to go to business networking events because it is difficult for you to get close to people? Do you end up hanging out with your colleagues and never meeting anyone new?

If you consider yourself a shy person, you are not alone. Studies show that more than 40 percent of adults are nervous about meeting new people. A survey showed that around 75 percent of people feel uncomfortable at business and social events. Perhaps this is because our parents always told us not to talk to strangers when we were young. But we all know the importance of networking to get to know customers.

Tips for meeting clients at business networking events:

o The best secret for shy people is that most people are worried about being rejected. They are not judging you. We’ve all been rejected at one point or another, and the feeling lingers for a long time. But in business situations, most people are interested in connecting with others. That’s why they go to networking events.

o To increase your chances of success, find someone who is alone. Approach that person with a smile on your face. Extend your hand and introduce yourself. You are almost guaranteed a warm welcome because it will rescue the person from being alone.

o If you cannot find a person standing, look around at the different groups in the room. Take a moment to study their body language. Do not approach two people who are chatting, they may be having a private conversation.

o Find a group where people seem to be having fun and have a lighthearted conversation. Approach the group and try to make eye contact with someone. Once you make eye contact, people usually pull away to let you in. Then you can reach out your hand and say: Hello, I am (your name). If you can’t make eye contact, wait or find another group.

o It is okay to present yourself this way. Most people have been in your place, or are in your place at the time, and they will feel empathy. After introducing yourself, ask about the show and if they’ve been there before. If you don’t know what to say, just ask: How is business doing?

o Remember to be honest, smile, make eye contact, and show interest by listening. Wait for acceptance and it will be accepted
