Using stock images

It’s okay to use stock images, however designers should use them sparingly. When they use a lot of stock photos, your project can seem unprofessional and even cheap at times. Also, there are many stock images that viewers can immediately recognize as they see them all the time.

For example, imagine a packaging design that has a stock image. Consumers will probably not buy this product as they would think that the quality of the product may be just as inferior in design.

Orthography

While graphic design and writing are two very different professions, it does not necessarily mean that graphic designers are excused from misspelling words.

They may think they can run a quick spell check and this is good enough, but many spell check systems can overlook graphic design errors. As a tip, designers should pay close attention to detail and go over their project before printing.

For example, when brochures are distributed as part of an advertising campaign, there should be minimal spelling errors, if any, in the text. Otherwise this will fail. Clients are often relentless when it comes to such mistakes. They may not care about the business at all, as the spelling errors show a lack of professionalism.

Kerning of fonts

Most people are not familiar with the term kerning, although it is simple to understand. This is a typography process, where the spacing between letters / characters is adjusted automatically or manually.

Kerning is crucial in certain situations, as when adjusting the letter / character spacing this makes the wording readable and easier on the eyes. However, when kerning is used incorrectly and not paid much attention to it, this can lead to significant problems, such as misinterpretations and damage to design continuity.

Grammar problems

Spelling errors aside, designers must ensure that the project comes with the correct grammar. Misused punctuation marks, like a comma, may seem like a minor problem, but a little mistake like that will allow a lot of people to ignore the entire project.

Design for themselves

Lastly, designers must keep in mind that they are designing for their clients. No matter who they are working with or what they are working on, it is imperative that they follow their clients’ instructions and don’t make changes just because they make it look so much better.

As the saying goes, clients are always right and since they pay to create their graphic design, it is the designers’ job to help them achieve their goal.
